Has Anyone Had a D&C?

I found out last Thursday that my baby had stopped developing at 7 weeks and I should have been 9. I've been cramping on and off since Saturday and have had tiny spots of blood. I'm scheduled to have a D&C on Thursday. Has anyone had one of these? What can I expect? What exactly do they do? I've read a bit, and I was wondering how long is the recovery time. I read a little about anesthesia. Am I put to sleep, or is it just like when I have a c-section and the deaden the bottom half or is it a local anesthetic? Has anyone had one of these and gone on to have a healthy pregnancy soon afterwards? Any positive or negative stories you can share would be great.

What can I do next?

I had a D&C almost 10 years ago. They put me to sleep. When I woke up I was a little crampy, but that was about it, also a little sleepy from the anesthesia. I think I had it done on a Thursday or Friday and I was back to work the following Tuesday. I think I took Monday off, just for emotional reasons. It's really quite painless. My dr. told me that I could have children after my cycle started again. Of course I was 19 at the time, so I waited until I was married years later to have kids. My cousin just had a D&C before she got pregnant this last time. No problems at all conceiving again.
Good luck with everything. So sorry to hear about the loss. Everything happens for a reason, it's times like these where you really have to be thankful for everything you have in your life at this moment.
Again good luck to you and your family.

I had one last winter and it wasn't near as bad as I'd made it out to be in my head. I did mine on a Friday and I was put completly under. I had my in-laws come and watch my kids for me because I'd be out of it for the rest of the day and I was. I took a few pain pills right when I got home and was fine the next day just tired feeling. I had mild crampiness for the next couple of days but it wasn't that bad at all. My D & C was due to super heavy and frequent periods (enough to make me anemic) after the birth of my daughter due to my body's hormones not adjusting properly and extended nursing. One of my good friends has had several done and has since had two children in between them and is pregnant with her third.

Dear R.,

I am so sorry to hear about your baby. I had 3 D&C's in the past. It was very emotional each time but the physical recovery only took a day or two. When you wake up you are very tired but you should not have any other side effects since you will be getting a light kind of anesthesia. You will be bleeding for a week or two after (just like having a heavy period). You will be in my thoughts.

I have had a couple. They should use general anesthesia (put you out completely). recovery time is variable. You will feel crampy and have some bleeding for a few days to a week(like a heavy period). You will feel okay, except for the emotional side of things, quickly. They usually recommend no relations until the bleeding stops. You can get pregnant right away, and actually you are pretty fertile afterwards. However, having been through this I would recommend that you wait for 6 months before trying again. Both from an emotional standpoint and also because if it is too close, you run a higher risk of a second miscarriage.
I have two websites for you. one for information

The second for support.http://www.hopexchange.com/

I know that this is such a terrible time and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Sorry to hear about your pregnancy. The D&C is a pretty quick out-patient procedure. I was told to take Alleve before hand, then they give me a "local" to numb the area, I was not put to sleep during... but I've heard that it's more common to be given something to make you drowsy....if they give you an option tell them you want to be out! The procedure is pretty quick, usually 15-20 minutes. Stay off your feet after the procedure but you should be fine the next day. Good luck!

R.,
I'm sorry this has happened to you but don't think you're alone or at fault. Probably 50% of the moms on this site have had a D&C. Miscarriages are not uncommon.

They put you under all the way. It's quick and you come out of it pretty quick. The lower block would be too time-consuming and difficult of a procedure.

I've had two D&Cs. I went to work the next day, just didn't lift anything heavy for a bit and no sex, like after you have a baby, for weeks. The doc will tell you.

My first D&C I did in the hospital and was put under. The 2nd I was so mad that I was having another miscarriage that I made him do the D&C in the office right then... obviously I was crazy. It was painful and NOT a good idea, but grief and anger clouded my brain.

You can start trying to have another baby as soon as your doc says it's okay to have sex.

I had a d&c at 15 weeks for a fetal demise - they did put me to sleep b/c of how far along I was - it was more emotionally difficult than it was physically. I was constipated and very emotional for a while after - but I did not bleed heavily or have any complications. My period started about 2-3 weeks later - which I wasn't expecting at all. I am so sorry for your loss. Best of luck.
