Has Anyone Ever Had an Endoscopy?

I have been experiencing some heartburn as well as stomach issues since September. I recently went to a gastroenterologist. He told me to take a proton pump inhibitor for a month, if after a month I'm not better, he wants to do an endoscopy. I am terrified of the idea. Has anyone ever had an endoscopy? Is it terrible or is it not as bad as I think it might be? I really hope I don't need one in the end, but feedback from anyone who has had one, would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I recently had one. I was terrified of going under but in the end, it was such an easy experience. I just remember counting down as they told me to and I got up to 4 before the anesthesia kicked in. Next thing I knew, they were waking me up and telling me it was all done. Easy Peasy. All that anxiety for nothing lol. If you have to get it done, you'll be fine. Good luck!

It's the easiest test in the world. You lay down under a warm blanket, they give you a mild sedative, you take a nap, wake up and it's done. Insist that he biopsy your small intestine for celiac disease if you end up having one. Some GIs don't routinely do that when looking at stomach and esophageal problems. Mine just happened to do that when testing for some reflux I was having and we were surprised to learn that I have celiac disease because I didn't have the more common symptoms of that. Had she not done that, I would have gone undiagnosed even longer and if someone screened for that via bloodwork, would have needed another endoscopy to confirm.

Tests are no fun, but this is routine and done with good sedation, so you'll experience no pain and may miss most of the experience anyway. Try not to imagine the worst because it's never going to reach those expectations. Nothing terrible will happen to you so please don't be terrified. Talk to the gastroenterologist's office and ask who you can speak with to learn more - share your fears and I'm sure the staff will help assuage them.

It's not bad at all. I just got done with all kinds of stomach tests and NONE of them were as bad as I thought they would be! I started at the Gastro doc and ended up at the ENT's. Gastro did the endoscopy thru my mouth, so I was twilight sedated which means you aren't aware of what's going on, but can still follow orders. The ENT goes thru the nose, and they numb you with a nasal spray then run a small diameter hose with camera. I gag really easily and I didn't gag once. Omeprazole worked better for me than the nexium. If one med doesn't work, be sure and try the other!

Is that where they put the tube down your throat? If so, then yes. I was sedated. Other than feeling a bit hoarse (sore) afterwards (for the rest of the day), there was not much to it if I recall. My husband was allowed to be there with me. We had it done at the clinic the GI specialist worked at.

Have you had any procedure done before where you've been sedated? I've had many - just had one recently. You just feel sleepy then wake up afterwards.

I've had far worse procedures (with cameras and biopsies, where they remove small samples) and even those were fine. I didn't feel those because sedation means you are unaware. This is nothing. You will be fine :)

I had one this past summer. It was nothing. They treated it like surgery in the sense that I wasn't supposed to have anything to eat or drink after midnight. They gave me an iv and had me lie down on my side. That's about all I remember until I woke up. I was groggy for awhile, but other than that I felt fine.

Have you ever had surgery before? If you have, this is really not bad at all compared to surgery. If you've never had surgery before, I completely get why you'd be scared. The unknown can be pretty terrifying. But it's fine. Really.

I had one under sedation. It was literally nothing to even concern yourself with if it comes to that.

It's no big deal.
They numb up the back of your throat so you don't gag and then a tiny camera goes up your nose and then down your throat.
I was completely comfortable the whole time and it doesn't take long at all.
I was not sedated and I didn't need to be.

Not as terrible as you would think. Let them put you to sleep. Make sure someone drives you home, and have some nice chicken and rice soup ready in the fridge. I took a nap after I ate.

It’s good for them to figure out your problem. I’ve had 2 of these procedures. It’s a whole lot easier than a colonoscopy!

My daughter had one when she was 12. Other than going under it wasn't a big deal, very routine. What exactly is it that you're "terrified" of?

You've got a lot of reassurances about the endoscopy. I've had two and they were super easy and painless. You'll be fine!

I did want to add if you'd ever heard that you can actually get acid reflux from too LITTLE stomach acid also. You could very well have too much but I would do some of the easy tests online to see if you have too little before starting that medication. It's not going to be pretty if you take it and don't need it.

I would also recommend a naturopath. They really take the time with you and take your other systems into consideration at the same time. Best thing I ever did for my body. Good luck!

Yes I have had one and it is really nothing to worry about. Like everyone had mentioned, you don't even realize anything since you are under anesthesia. I would not take the proton pump inhibiter however. Doctors just prescribe drugs and don't get to the root cause. I always recommend taking digestive enzymes and a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a warm glass of water 20-30 minutes before a meal. Especially the ones with acidic foods like tomato sauce. I'm happy to chat with you further if you would like.

You might want to try an elimination diet to see if there are certain foods that might be triggering your heartburn. My brother did this and found that there were several foods that if avoided just about cleared up the issue.
