Hi mamas,
We just got home from the doctors. Long story short my 2 year old daughter will need braces on her ankles, physical therapy 2-3 times per week for anywhere from 6 months to who knows. However I find myself worried about the MRI the most since she will have to be put under for it. Needless to say this hasn't been the best of days. Anyone out there been through this? Words of wisdom, anything to avoid or make sure we do? My head is just filled with dread and trying to keep perspective that is the grand scheme o things this is a hiccup and nothing more.
Thanks ladies!!

What can I do next?

My daughter had to have an endoscopy when she was 3 and was put under for that. It was really hard as a parent to go through it, but she did just fine. She didn't like the IV, but she didn't have any problems with the anesthesia and didn't vomit or anything afterwards. She slept a lot for the rest of that day, but was fine by the next day. I definitely think it is MUCH harder on us as parents than on them. They are so resilient! Don't worry, mama, she really will be okay!

My ds had to be under anesthesia twice for endoscopy/bronchoscopy procedures under 1 year old. It is more scary for us Mama's :)

Both times I was allowed to carry him back to the surgical room and they gave me the option of waiting until he fell asleep before leaving. Which I did, I couldn't bear him seeing me walk away while he was in a strange room.

he did great, no complications at all and they let me in recovery so I was holding him as he woke up so that he wouldn't be scared. I am not sure how different it will be for an MRI but rest assured that they do these all day and your little girl will be fine. I know the thought of them going through this especially when it goes with difficult disgnosis is heartbreaking, but know that they are doing it to make her better. you will look back and it will just be a speed bump :)

My daughter had surgery at 16 months and I was too worried about the anesthesia and the doctor told me that there is no greater risk now then there will be when she is 16 years old, for instance. The only time it becomes a litte iffy is if they are under 3 months old. Before my daughter was put under, they gave her a sedative to drink so that she would be calm and she was entirely calm before she was wheeled in. After the surgery, when she woke up she started asking for her toy. She was perfectly fine that night, not at all overly-tired. Also, try to get an AM appointment, cause they have to fast, so you do not want a hungry kid. Good Luck!

When my 2 year old son had to have an MRI and hip aspiration I was so nervous because of the sedation. But they let me hold his hand until he was out, and I was back by his side before he woke, he never knew I was not there the whole time. Kids can feel our emotions, so try to stay steady and calm for her. Best of luck and blessed be.

My daughter wad 3 when she had to be put under for dental procedures. I was a wreck! She was just fine. Gave her some" magic juice" she got real relaxed and sleepy then they took her back. She cried when they woke her up and she was drowsy for a few hrs but then just fine! Trust them. They know what they are doing!

As stated by others, they do sedate so that you (or child) will stay totally still in the machine (have heard they are noisy). My granddaughter had sedation when they MRI'd her lower spine to check if she had tethered cord syndrome. She did fine, tho wasn't quite ready to wake up - think they'd given her a little bit extra for what they had to do to check it all around - but she woke up, drank part of her slushie drink, and a few minutes later had me carrying her out! Good luck to your little one!

I think you've gotten a lot of terrific answers already, but I just wanted to add my experience to the list too to help put your mind at ease. I have a son with leukemia and he has been (and still is) sedated regularly for surgery and countless procedures. Only once has he had any sort of a problem and it was only an irregular heart rate for a few minutes that corrected itself. He recovers from the meds really quickly and feels fine afterward. Try and remember that this is what these people do for a living and just trust that everything will work out fine- the odds are good that it will. Best wishes for your daughter as she continues therapy!

I have had 2 mri's. I see why the sedation is necessary...one must remain very still while in the machine. Mine had a loud banging noise that would be pretty frightening for a child. Good luck & hope all turns out well.

My son had to be sedated at 6mo for a CT scan (oral sedative) and at 18mo for a double tympanostomy procedure (general anethesia), and my daughter just went through sedation (oral sedative) at 13mo for an MRI. They did well with all forms at those ages and came out of the sedation quickly and with minimal side effect. They stayed in recovery until they took enough fluid (pedialyte or bm) and kept it down. The one thing I learned with my son during his first expereince was to ensure we had his bottle/cup and his lovey ready for him when he woke. Each time following that has been key to comforting them before the test or procedure and upon waking.

My granddaughter went through this and worse, and it all worked out without her being very upset at all. The meds will do their job. Don't worry, Mama. If she sees you upset, she'll think there's something to be upset about.
