Has Anyone Ever Had a D & C?

I had a hysteroscopy yesterday because about a month ago, my gynecologist performed an ultrasound because of abnormal bleeding and found polyps on my uterus. The Dr performed a hysteroscopy yesterday to verify that they were, in fact, polyps. He said that I need a d & c under general anesthesia in order to have them removed. I have never been put under and I am really nervous. Anyone ever have this procedure before, and under general anesthesia?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your responses. I just got home from my d&c and feeling a little crampy, woozy and tired, but otherwise feel great. Thanks again to everyone who responded.

Yes, I've had a D&C, we called it a dusting and cleaning job.

it worked well for me and I ended up having a Hysterectomy. You will be fine.

I've had general anesthesia and did fine. It whacks you out for a day or so, so you definitely plan on doing nothing and having someone to wait on you. But there are so many types of anesthesia available that they can choose one suited to your medical history. A D&C doesn't usually take too long, so you won't be under that long. Remember that an anesthesiologist is there the whole time, monitoring your condition - this is a separate job from the doctor performing the procedure.

My mother and my stepdaughter both had D&Cs, and while reactions vary, you can expect some cramping afterwards. I'm sure they'll give you something to help you manage it.

While these things are never easy to go through, it's a routine procedure and not terribly complicated. So the risks are low. I'm sure it's preferable to leaving the polyps alone. You can get a 2nd opinion if you are concerned though. That is your right and it's not an insult to your doctor if you request one.

I've never had a D&C but I've been put under for tonsils when I was a kid and for a colonoscopy just last year.
General anesthesia never bothered me.
Removing polyps should be an easy thing - I think easier than dealing with fibroids.

One of my moms friends had a fibroid removed that was the size of a watermelon.
She ended up having a hysterectomy as soon as she was finished having kids.

I have. I had it done as part of another OBGYN procedure that I was put under for, and they did it at same time just to check (to be on safe side) and it turned up nothing in my case.

You just wake up after, then sit up and wait to be discharged (they'll monitor you), I think they may offer you something to eat/drink (can't remember), and then that's it - once you're good to go, my husband was there to drive me home. I had no issues - no cramping, etc.

Initially I misread the word “hysteroscopy”. Sorry about that. I guess it’s good that you don’t have to have a hysterectomy with those polyps...

Did you ask your doctor why you need general anesthesia done? Are the polyps high up into the uterus?

I would ask him to explain the different choices of anesthesia.

I had a d&c for the same thing, polyps. Only I didn’t go under anthesia; my doc did a local, so I was awake. It was extremely painful, even with the meds. I chose not to use anesthesia because of timing. I was trying to get pregnant at the time and my doc could perform this faster without anesthesia. I got pregnant the next time we tried. However, if I was to have another, I would choose to go under.

I had a d & c under general anesthesia after a miscarriage. I threw up when I woke up, but otherwise felt fine physically, and was able to go home soon afterwards. I didn't experience cramping. Had general anesthesia for a c-section once also, and didn't throw up, so I don't think that's always a thing. In any case, it's a routine procedure, not worth the worry. Going under feels a little weird, but I think it's worth it.

I had a D&C after a missed miscarriage under general anesthesia. The procedure itself didn't take long. I had no issues from it. I also went under for wisdom teeth extraction and had no issues afterward.

I have had numerous D&C's - most were for miscarriages (sadly had many) and I also had a polyp removed. After having many GYN surgeries, I started requesting IV Valium instead of general anethesia. The anesthesiologist is required to visit every patient before surgery. I started asking them directly about alteranatives to general anesthesia. IV Valium works just fine and it's a lot easier to recover from. They were usually very accommodating..

are you nervous about the D&C or the anesthesia?

i've never had a D&C but know tons of women who have, and don't know a single person who's had a problem with it.

i've had general anesthesia several times and it's been fine. i'm always surprised to wake up and find it's over. you'll be woozy for a day or two, so don't drive or have anything important you need to do.

that's it.
