I finally was diagnosed with a uterine polyp after 1.5 years of extremely heavy and clotty periods with somewhat variable cycle length. Dr. ordered a regular vaginal Ultrasound over a year ago and it indicated no abnormalities. A few weeks ago during my annual exam I again pressed about the ridiculous periods I've been having & she ordered a hystero sonogram. The technician found a small polyp and the next step is to do a hysteroscopy and remove the polyp (via D&C) while also checking to see if there are any other issues in the uterus preventing us from conceiving # 2. The idea of a D&C freaks me out, but my doc made it seem less like a traditional D&C. Anyway, I would love to hear from others who have underwent this procedure and any advice you can give regarding recovery would be greatly appreciated.
I should also say that I have had 2 laparscopies at age 18 and again at 19 to diagnose major abdominal pain. The most they found were some ovarian cysts. Despite that, it took us nearly 5 years of trying to conceive to finally be successful. Strangely enough, we succeeded without any assistance in the end. I think my hubbie was holding out ;-). I delivered my first (and only) child at age 32.

I had a D&C last month and there was no pain at all afterwards and almost no bleeding at all. I went back to work the next day. I felt as if nothing had even been done.
I have had 2 D&Cs not for the same reason that you are having yours but both of them were completely pain free. I did not know what to expect, the first one was for a miscarriage and the emotional hurt was what was painful not the physical. I was surprised they sent me home with pain killers. The second one was after I had my baby 2 weeks later I could not stop bleeding, that procedure as well did not cause any discomfort.

I can't help with the part about the procedure, however if you had ovarian cysts, it is possible you have PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrom) which can cause infertility. I would check into it, your doctor can do a simple blood test to see if you have it or not (its caused by a hormon inbalance that they check for) you can have several cysts or none at all.
Anyway, it would be beneficial. We tried for 1 year before i got pregnant with our first, then we tried for 15 months for the second and finally went and saw somone (Dr. Chauhan in Sugarland- excellent by the way) and we got pregnant the first month :) Anyway...it could hurt to check!

Try not ot worry about it. Just 2 weeks ago I had an ovarian cyst removed, hysteroscopy, a D&C, die through my tubes to make sure they were open, my ovaries put back in place (they were "kissing"), endo lasered off... the works. This is not my first time for all of this though. My Dr. did the D&C to help "give me a fresh start" for conceiving #2 (hopefully). I had the procedure done on a Wednesday and was back at work on Monday. It normally takes me 5 days to recover from all of this, but this time around I took a little longer to bounce back. Laproscopies have come a long way in 13 years, but at least you have an idea of what to expect. Hope this helps.
I had a D&C about 8 months ago due to heavy bleeding and severe PMS. I had absolutely NO complications and found the procedure to be quick and painless. I am so happy I had it done, I was nervous at first, but realized that ALOT of women have this done, it has been a blessing to me, it has given me smaller periods and decreased my PMS with no complications. I am convinced that you will be just fine, this is a pretty standard in office procedure. Good Luck:)

I love reading Mamasource but rarely reply but today when I read your concerns, I thought, that was me 12 years ago.
I also was diagnosed with polyps in my uterus but I added some cysts on my ovaries all at the same time. I found out that I had polycystic ovarian disease which is common in many women. What this means is that I do not ovulate like a normal woman; I spontaneously ovulate which makes it very hard to get pregnant. I ended up having a D&C to remove the polyps, ovarian wedge resection to remove the cysts and a chromeotubation to make sure my tubes were open. I was placed on the drug clomid which is a mild fertility drug but it is also used to help women ovulate in order to have normal periods. I was pregnant within one month from my surgery. My beautiful daughter is now 11 1/2 years old and she has a 6 year old sister (clomid only, no surgery) and a 3 year old brother (totally natural). I noticed that the cysts on my ovaries came back when my kids were about 3 years old. It was like clockwork for me. Everything you have stated sounds just like what I went through.
Oh yeah, one more thing that you might find interesting that I had occur with my polyps. I had sometimes a constant period. I would start and have it for two weeks, then off a week and start again. Sometimes it was light and sometime heavy and clotty. According to the Dr. that the majority of the time I was bleeding was not my period but caused by the polyps. This completely went away after the D & C. The polyps have never returned.
I cannot tell you how to fell but I hope that my story will help the worry pains subside or go away. And, maybe I have given you some hope that the 2nd bundle of joy may not be as far away as you think/feel it is.

Don't worry. I had the same procedure done last November. It was the easiest procedure I have ever had done. Nothing to it. A friend of mine had it done in September too. We both also had a polyp removed. There was no pain, minimal spotting for a day afterward and little cramping. Had it done on Friday and went back to work on Monday. Afterward, my periods were normal. Awesome!

I had the same thing done about 2 yrs ago for the same reason. I have never regretted it. It was a very simple very easy procedure and my periods are back to normal. It is so worth it not to have heavy continual bleeding. Good luck!
