Has anyone taken the IUD for a form of birth control? IF you have taken it can you give me any advice about it like did you stop getting your cycles and etc? What form of IUD did you take (mirena etc)? I have a blood clotting problem and I cant take any form of estrogen for birth control (no patch, pills, ring etc) so the only two things i can take are the depo shot (which i got off) and the IUD. I heard the IUD makes your cycles stop just like the depo and I dont want that.... any advice and tidbits is needed?

Hi K.-
I have a clotting disorder, too, and have to have non-estrogen birth control. I got an IUD after my girls were born. Until recently, when I restarted warfarin therapy, I didn't have a period. Now it's started back up, but it's very light and short.
I have the mirena IUD, good for 5 years. I like that I don't have to worry about remembering to get a shot or take a pill. I also like that, even with the blood thinners, I don't have a super heavy period like I used to get.

Good luck!

I have been on the mirena iud for 4 years now and I have been very happy with it. I haven't totally stopped my cycle, but find that my periods are very light, like only there on the T.P. when I go to the bathroom. I had a hard time getting pregnant after being on the pill for years and didn't want to go through that again, so after my daughter was born, my OB suggested it. I have had no problems with it, can't feel it, would do it again...
good luck deciding

I have a Mirena IUD. It was very easy to insert for me because I got it at my 6 week postpartum appointment. They say it is usually a little harder to insert. I have a little cramping/bleeding at first then have only had spotting since then. If you don't want your cycles to stop I would think that the paraguard which is just copper, has no hormones. I guess it is a possibility with all IUD's though.

K.,

I have had the ParaGuard for quite a few years and have no complaints. It's non hormonal and has improved my sex-life, no need to worry about any barrier methods of birth control as I've tried everything and those hormones throw my body off and I can't deal with all those side effects. I like having a regular cycle every month. Please see: http://www.plannedparenthood.org/birth-control-pregnancy/...

Hi,
I have an almost 2 year old boy and am 35 now. I had my IUD placed 3 months after he was born and really like it - I have the Merina I think it's called and it is good for 5 years. I like not getting my period - no tampons or pads to buy! But it's true, I have not had my period at all since before I got pregnant. Anyway, there have been absolutely no side effects (I didn't like the pill or the shots - too much weight gain, mood swings, etc.)
Good luck.

I had the paraguard IUD after my first baby and loved it!!! The nice thing about it was I was able to get pregnant immediately after having it removed. After I have this last baby in August I plan on going back on the IUD. I did have my regular period and like Angie, they were heavier at first. Other than that, nothing else to worry about.

I had a non-hormonal IUD, I don't know which one, but it was a very easy method of birth control--nice to not have to worry about birth control every day! I had a little bit of cramping at first, that continued the entire time I had it off and on but it wasn't anything unbearable. And my periods were a little more painful than usual. I wound up getting it taken out because of the way it prevents pregnancy--the more I thought about it the more uncomfortable I became with it, but that was just a personal ethical thing and had nothing to do with the IUD itself.

Hello. I have had my mirena IUD for two years now and I still have my cycle monthly. There is minimal cramping in the beginning, but after that it's fine. I used to have heavier cycles, but now they are much lighter. I hope this helps.

I had the paraguard IUD put in Dec and my first month I thought I was going to die I bleed so much for 10 days (I have never in my life had a period like this before I usually bleed for 1-2 days at the most if anything at all but I hung in there as my doctor told me it would be this way as my body is trying to figure out what the object is. My second cycle was a few weeks ago and that was much better heavier flow again but only 4 days this time. So I am guess that the next one will be much better. Other then that I love it I was having issues with all the other types of birth control making me an evil B**^& to my husband. I just can't have any other hormones in my body other then the ones I produce on my own. I am back to my happy sexual self and a lot happier.

Hello,
I am also 27 with two children. We don't plan on having any more, so I just got my Mirena IUD on the 13th. I've only had it a two days but I think it will work well. I wish someone had told me that it hurts to get put in. I was so crampy and had to drive my self home. The next day I was fine with some spotting. My only other complait is that I can feel the string end poke when I sit down fast. I read that they soften in time and they wont feel sharp anymore. So there are the thing I didn't know, good luck on your choice.

There are different kinds of IUD's, the one I have is non-hormonal, so I do still get my cycle. It is actually stronger than before, so I had to get used to it a little first. Hope this helps.

I have the IUD, have had it for about 2 years. I do not have my monthy cycle anymore but do have cramping during that time. I do spot once in a while but honestly its the best thing ever. I would recommend it to anyone, no worrys just need to check for "strings" about every month or so. Hope this helps you...
