Anyone Have or Know Someone Who Has an IUD?

I'm looking at getting an IUD soon and wanted to gather personal experience and testimonials from women who have or have had one recently. I've read a lot of medical materials, but want the real scoop from real women. They've changed drastically since the bad ones they had 30 years ago, so please only share experiences within the last 10 years.

Due to migraine problems, hormonal methods are not a good option for me, though I'm told the hormone level in the Mirena would be ok. Does anyone have experience with Mirena vs. Paragard? Any info at all? Thanks!

I have a Mirena IUD, which I got a few months after my daughter was born. I can't feel it at all and it seems to be working quite well. I had extremely heavy periods for the first five months or so, probably exacerbated by being post-partum. But now they are tapering off quite a bit, which is supposed to be a benefit of the Mirena. I have also had negative reactions to hormone contraceptives, but I've noticed none of them from the Mirena device. I hope this helps!

Hello,
I am 53 yers old & I've used an IUD of various kinds for some 30 years with total success and no complaints.
Yes, the market for IUDs has changed immensely in 30 years and it has only improved. I started wearing the notorious Dalkon Shield (removed from the market), but it worked just fine for me. I wore a Lippy's Loop of plastic and I now wear a copper coil (I think it is called), since I am only beginning menopause and still need to practice birth control.
The idea of a foreign object in your body is unappealing to many women, but for me, the idea of altering my hormones with a pill was even less appealing and with an IUD, you never have to remember to take a pill, or pack the pills for a trip. The IUD isn't for everyone, but it served me well for 30 years.
I hope my experience, however dated, may be of help to you.

I'm 44 yr old mother of one 13 year old boy. Not looking to have any more, not able to afford the "co-pay" at this time to have tubes tied. So I get a Depo shot in the butt every three months. It might not work well for you, since it's like the birth control pill.... but the Dr. won't give me the pill anymore since I'm over 40 and smoke. Yet they have no problem with a Depo shot, so it is SOMEWHAT different. A bonus, I don't have a period, just maybe some spotting right before the next shot.

I live in Rosemount too.
Good luck!!

A. - I got the Paragaurd 8 weeks after my daughter was born. I'm 34 and had lots of medical craziness, so I didn't want to have any hormones. I've only had it for 3 months, but I'm pleased. I'd be happy to share further or answer any questions. Feel free to email me. - R.

I currently have a copper IUD (Paraguard). It was put in in Nov of 2004. I have not had any problems with it. The only side effect I have had is longer heavier periods and stronger cramps. They were worse intially, the first 3-4 months, to the point I thought about having it removed but now it is not a problem. To me it is well worth the money savings convience. Let me know if you have any other questions.

I had the Mirena IUD put in 2 months after my twins were born (they're going to be 2 in April). I had it in for 5 months before finally having it taken out. I was completely irregular after having the IUD put in. I would have my period for 3 weeks and one week without it. Then I'd have it for 3 weeks again and one week without. My dr. said that I was in that very small percentage of woman who have the opposite effect of what the IUD should do for us, which is almost make you period go away.

I've never been sensitive to hormones in birth control pills but for some reason the IUD didn't work for me. I really wanted it to work out but it just wasn't for me.

I hope it works out for you. It would've been so nice to not have to worry about taking a pill everyday.

Your request for a non-hormonal, non-permanent method of birth control just jumped out at me--I do not have personal experience with an IUD, but I have struggled through the years with various forms of artificial birth control. It wasn't until I learned about the Natural Family Planning method and put it into practice that my husband and I finally found the perfect non-hormonal, non-permanent method. It has helped strengthen our marriage and has provided me with the education that I need to really know my body and cycle. It's a beautiful gift that I hope you will look into. Classes are available locally. The website is www.tcnfp.org
Best wishes to you!

I did try an IUD also (Mirena) because I have migraine issues also. Unfortuantely my body rejected the IUD, but just wanted to let you know that I am now using the NuvaRing and do not have any migraines. Since the hormones are not going through your digestive system it causes less migraines for some people. (you insert it vaginally, keep it in for three weeks and then keep it out for a week...then start with a new one). It may be an option to try if you are nervous about the IUD. I know many people that have had good luck with the IUDs though. Good luck...I know that the migraine issue really eliminates many options for birth control.
