Her-My-O-Nee is how I have always heard it pronounced. I once had a client from Greece with that name and that is how she pronounced it.
I have seen all but the last movie and to this day I still have no idea how to pronounce Emma Watson's character correctly.
How would it be pronounced w/o the British accent?
Is it hair-mee-oh-nee? Or hair-mee-oni?
I know, I'm slow. And really bored right now.
LOL Thanks you guys! This has been very educational. They say it SO fast in the movies that by the time I hear it correctly, they start another scene. Please don't slam anyone who you think is pronouncing it wrong - let's be nice to one another :)
General consensus is: Her-My-Oh-Knee and Her-My-Knee. Either way, its a very pretty name.
Her-My-O-Nee is how I have always heard it pronounced. I once had a client from Greece with that name and that is how she pronounced it.
Her-my-o-nee
That's the proper pronunciation as well as how everyone in all of the movies pronounced it. J.K. didn't make the name up.
My kids, all Harry Potter heads, 19, 17, and 14, have always said er-my-OH-nee. Never corrected them, anyway, now we can call her Mrs. Weasley, tehehe.
:)
I thought it was Her-my-oh-knee.
no, you aren't slow...
Her-my-oh-knee....that's how I heard it and that's how I say it...
Her-My-O-Knee -- just like in the movie.
HER-MY-O-NEE

It's correctly "Her-MY-oh-nee." The "Her-mine-ee" people hear is due to regional British accents in the films combined with saying the name very quickly at times.
A lot of Americans thought it was "Hermie-own" when the books first came out, as some news articles reported back then and as some of my own friends said it. But my husband and all our relatives are British and it's a very old-fashioned British name and it's always "Her-MY-oh-nee."
Yarmatey is spot on :)
I say Herm-*I*-o -nee
Her-My-Nee is how I say it.
I've heared it prounced "her-my-knee."
.
HER MINE EEE
At least that's how I 'hear' it!
Catwalk's got it right! ... when reading it my brain went with Katrina's version, however from an interview done by JK she broke it down and Catwalk's correct.
Mom on the G.O.'s got the written on that website thingy ... really I think it's a personal preference .. it's a book character's name.
We usually say Her-my-nee.
I think Her-my-o-nee is more European.
I've always loved hearing British accents.
When I watch a DVD from BBC America, I love the bit they put in at the beginning about how, besides being entertained, we get a chance to "hear words pronounced correctly".
It cracks me up every time I hear it.
HER MINE EE
HER MY OH KNEE
Both are right, the o sound is kind of rolled and is more accent, even in the movies, some characters use the oh some don't.
For example, Hagrid says:
HER MOINE EE
HER MOYN EE
In "The Goblet of Fire" Hermione instructed Victor Krum on how to say her name.
It is Her my oh knee or her my uh knee.
Depends on the accent the person puts on it. A name is a name. My name should not be pronounced any differently here than some other country. My name is what my name is.
its ) my family is from England) priunced HER MINE EE
Her-my-knee
That's how we say it, and that's how I always thought they were saying.
ETA: Apparently I'm an idiot. You can stop with the PMs people. I get it. It's not the first time today I've been told this.
Well, I figure, the way they pronounce it in the movie, is the way her name is meant to be said.
J.K. Rowling once said in an interview that she is ok with however one chooses to pronounce any of the character's names and then gave the example of one little boy pronounces it " HERMI-ONE" . However you say it Ms. Rowling would not object to.
Her-my-o-nee, accent on the my
her-MY-uh-knee,
like penelope = pen-EL-uh-pee and recipe= Reh-suh-pee
we get this all the time, as our dd is named persephone per-SEF-uh-knee
thank the ancient Greeks
i thought it was her-my-me?????
I'm thinking its "her-my-o-nee"
It's pronounced like: Her MY oh knee...emphasis on MY. It's always been Her MY oh knee as far as I know...British accent or not. Sometimes some may say it as: Her MY ah knee. I've never heard it any other way...it's a very old name too. If in doubt...consult a dictionary.
Her-my-knee, the O sounds is almost silent because it's said fast.
