My husband and I really like the name Neveah. It is Heaven spelled backwards. I heard it of it about 2 years ago. When I heard it they pronounced it Nevay or Nevae. My Mom is pronouncing it Nevah or Neva - like Ava...she thinks we need to spell it Nevae....so I was wondering how you would pronounce it. Thanks!!
Thank you to everyone who responded to the spelling of Neveah! We've agreed on another name. Her name will be Saylor Rae.

I have heard it several times before and think it is suppose to be pronounced Na Vay Ah with the first Na being like the sound N makes and then Vay with the long A sound and then it ends with the soft lowercase A sound. It is soft and sweet sounding. It is similar to the sounding of Hoseah. The ways you heard it pronounced sound incorrect for the actual spelling as if it is pronounced Nevay like ebay then it should be spelled that way. and to have it sound like Ava it would need to be spelled Naeva....that just sounds too much like naval.... anyway. I hope this helps. i like Neveah.... and think it sounds great for a boy pronounced Knee Vay ah and for a girl Na Vay ah or Nev E ah. but it is a good bit interchangebale depending on where the weight lies in choice of accenting it. good luck. Here are my 2-cents-worth of opinion. I would pronounce Neveah as Knee-vuh and Nevae as never with a Boston accent. I like the name; but I think she will always have to spell and pronounce it for people. I have to do that with the last name I married into. It is not a really big deal for me most of the time, although I was an adult when I got the uncommon, non-phonetic name. If you also have a difficult last name, it might be too much for a child.

Hi,
I think you should spell and pronounce your child's name how you wish.
I have a Daniel, Tiana, Elizabeth, Gage, Shau'Rae (shou - rey)
and Horatio, (yes, like as in Horatio Caine from CSI:Miami) I love to have unusual names for my kids since mine is D. (Der-rah) it has never been pronounced or spelled correctly. But I love my name. You give that baby a very unique name she will love and charish all her life. She will know how much you both love her by giving her such an wonderful name. Not that I have anything against he "usual" names for children. Not at all, I have a Daniel. But I wanted mine to stand out and be noticed. For the strong and wonderful people they are.
Good luck!!

Hi Sydne,
I can see by your own name that your mom liked unusal names herself. So she needs to let it go and let you name your baby what you want and I personally love Nevaeh, although she may take some ribbing as she grows up with such an odd name, If you hadn't told me that it was Heaven spelled backwards I would have never guessed it!
If you change to what your Mother suggested then you have defeated your purpose altogether, in which case I would say go to a name that isn't as unusal as the one you picked out.
No matter what you decide, good Luck and enjoy that precious baby girl!
And another quick hint,,,, get your 3 year old to say the name,if she can't come close to saying it, you may want to think it over a little.

Pronouce it how you want, people will get used to it. I have an Aliya (uh-lee-uh)and I wouldn't have her named any thing else, she's 20 now! You might also consider just naming her "Heaven". Nothing wrong with that.

If you spell it Neveah, it wouldn't be Heaven backwards. You'd have to spell it Nevaeh. The first one I would pronounce "ne-vay-uh" and the second way would seem like "ne-va-eh" which seems awkward.

Hi Sydne, I really don't have a comment about it but just to say be prepared to spell and correct the name on legal documents, etc. for the rest of your/her life. The dumb-downed graduates in the work force can't even get my son's name correct....John. Gets exasperating after a while. Anyway, good luck.
BTW, I bet you've already had the experience with your name.

Sydne,
It is your baby you spell it and pronounce it anyway you want too. You don't have to listen to anyone saying you are spelling it or pronouncing it wrong. My sister spelled her son's name Byran, and pronounces it Bryan. People will start pronoucing the way you are pronouncing it, after they hear you saying it long enough. Don't give in. I love the name. I love unusal names, my oldest son's name is Scotland Waine. He is 27 and he loves his name. He really loves that he is the only one with that name. Good Luck, and congrats!C.

Congratulations on your upcoming arrival. I feel that you should pronounce it however you would like. My name is L. - rhymes with Dejon mustard. Most people pronounce it as La-jan at first, but after I correct them once they usually get it. My name is actually a conversation piece and people remember me by my unusual name. Good Luck and remember this is your child. Don't let others discourage you in your decision.

Well if you change the spelling of the name, Neveah would not have the same value as it once did before. (Heaven spelled backwards.) I think that it is a beautiful name and pronouncing it like "Ava" could still be possible. Just remember that this is your baby, and remember why you chose the name in the first place.

Neveah is my grand dtr's middle name. Why change the spelling if you like the fact that it is heaven spelled backwards? Kinda takes away the uniqueness, doesn't it? Anyway it is pronounced...Neh-vay-uh. Very simple actually. It is difficult when others do not try to pronounce names correctly, but it is life. She will be the one to live with it for the rest of hers. I have an odd first name, well not so odd, but a very old name and I hate it on medical records and such. but have learned to live with it. PS: I use my middle name in everyday life!! LOL!!

Hi there!
I've heard this name a lot! It's getting to be pretty popular. If you wanna stick to Heaven spelled backwards, then I have always heard it pronounced Nevaeh Na-Va-Ah. You're always gonna have someone pronounce it wrong no matter what but I think you should stick to the spelling of Nevaeh just to keep it simple.
I remember when I was growing up I always wanted to name my daughter Heavenlyn pronounced Heava-Lyn. So you can take that one if you like it. We ended up naming my daughter Jordan. I wanted to name her Charlie but the hubby wouldn't let me. :-)
Congrats on the new baby girl coming, wow 3 girls. Good Luck to you and if you need anything else or just wanna chat you can email me at ____@____.com
Have a great day!

My fist inclination was as Neva, but only because I have a niece with that name. She spells it Neva, but I still was inclined to pronounce your way Neva. I have never heard of these other ways of pronouncing it that every one is talking about. People misspell and mispronounce even the simplest names. Your going to have to spell it for everyone anyway, because it isn't a common name. I love the idea of heaven spelled backwards. She your child. Do what feels right. I had a name picked out for one of my children and when he was born it didn't fit. It took me an extra day to find the right name, but I haven't looked back since. You do what feels right to you. Call her what you want and spell it the way you want. These days everything goes. I constantly have to spell one of my son's names, but I wouldn't change it.

Greetings and congratulations on the upcoming birth of your new baby. It's really a beautiful name. I've heard it pronounced Nevay. My friend's daughter named her baby Angel Neveah but pronounces it Ne-vay-a. Pronounce it how YOU want to. Regardless of how you spell it, people will say what they want to. If you change the spelling, you change the meaning. If you want Heaven spelled backwards, then leave it as is. Once you add a middle or first name, you'll know how you want to pronounce it. Good luck and please post the final decision.

I knew a women who named her daughter Neveah...very sad story, her son had been murdered by her boyfriend while she was preggers with Neveah...she had thought about naming the baby something simple like "melissa" but when her son joined our lord in heaven there was no other name that stuck out quite like Neveah. It is beautiful and exotic and meaningful. I am sure your mother would learn to say it just fine in time and the spelling I think can only be one way...or the whole heaven part of it just falls off, and isn't that what our children are...just a little piece of heaven right here on earth.
She had told me when I first heard the name she said the actress Neve the e is making the sound as in the word ever than you just forget that there is an h on the end and the letter a as in a, b, c.....Neveah...beautiful!

Hi Sydne,
Beautiful thought for the name, but because of the ways it could be pronounced, I immediately thought of the saying "never say never" with many folks not even pronouncing the 'r'. My daughter was pulled in a similar way thinking "celestial" and ended up naming her little girl Isabella Celeste. Just a couple of my thoughts.

I am a firm believer that people should be able to name their child by their choice. However, before you give the child its name, think about the future. How hard will the name be for the teachers to pronounce, her classmates to pronounce? How many times will she have to say it for them to understand what it is? Will she be able to say it correctly early on? What about her siblings, will they be able to say it right, or explain it to others? It is a beautiful name, but could you shorten it to Neva and still have the same great feeling? All I can say as a former teacher, it is much easier to pronounce names correctly and know that the child is listening to what you have to say. Good luck and enoy all 3 little girls. As ever, Grandma and former teacher

I know what you mean about the whole pronunciation thing! We named our third baby (a girl) Evy (like chevy) but no one seems to be able to get it right - Ava or Eavie is mostly what we get. I wanted to spell it Evi but people said it like levi (the jeans). Anyway, my first thought on Neveah was that it sounds like ne-vee-uh. I think it is just a beautiful name... one I've never heard. Good luck with everything...
