Happy Birthday? - Hackettstown,NJ

Ha! So today I learn preschool is off due to President's Weekend. Then my toilet clogs to the point of overflowing. My sink is leaking and I spent the day vacuuming the couch and taking my daughter to the laundromat, which easily entertained her. Whew!

That said, I am celebrating my birthday next weekend, sans daughter, add one hubby and nice restaurant.

Does anybody really celebrate their birthdays on the day of anymore?

Or plunging their toilets?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

DH bought me my favorite Chinese food dinner, a gift card to my hair salon (as per request) and he and my daughter sang Happy Birthday. Not too shabby. Even if they did start dinner without me because i was on the phone long distance! Oh, and the toilet is unclogged!

My DH calls me a control freak. I won't get into a car unless I'm driving 95% of the time. With that being said, I do not like to leave the kids home without me. When they were younger I would arrange dinner and a show with friends. Now, with two ADHD ODD kids in the house I try not to leave them with other people often.
My kids cheer when the washer breaks! They love the laundromat!
So, yes-I would much rather be home on my birthday than come back from dinner to toilets and laundry overflowing, and a pond under the sink.

For me, my birthday is just another day. This year, for the first time in a long time, I actually went out to lunch with a friend ON my birthday. But that's only because I had gotten sick the week before and had to push off our get together. Otherwise, I would have been alone on my bday, not doing anything special.

And I didn't get to celebrate/go out to eat with my husband and daughter until the weekend.

Can't say I've had anything as fun and entertaining, though, as having to plunge a toilet on my birthday. Though I've had snowstorms, blizzards, and freezing cold (January bday). ;)

Oh! And thanks for reminding me it's President's Day. That will save me the embarassment of going to (an empty) mailbox for the mail.

Birthday's are a BIG DEAL in our house.

It is celebrated on the day of. For the kids, their "parties" may be another day - but at home? there is a cake and they get what they want for dinner. I make whatever they want for breakfast as well.

My husband doesn't care about birthday's - it's just another day to him. However - I told him to kiss my lily white rear end - and we WILL celebrate his birthday. Over the last 17 years, he's getting BETTER! :)

For me - my men bake me a cake and make me dinner or we go out.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! hope you have a wonderful day!!

I celebrated my 30th birthday by getting my very first cavity filled. Yep, I know how to have a good time.

Hope your birthday evening is better than the rest of your day was! Happy Birthday!

We get together for every single bday and every holiday as a family...I have a small one. But even when I was small, my family made it a point to get together so we don't know any better. =)

Since being married for the second time and both of us having to share our holidays, we rarely celebrate anything on its actual day, which is fine except for July 4th and Halloween. =) Even Santa can come the weekend before for the "special" kids. lol

Happy birthday! (Hope next weekend is better!)

I'm sorry, ES, but I had to laugh when I read the part that you vacuumed your couch to entertain your daughter! (I remember your post about your husband asking why you clean in front of her!)

I hope you don't spend your birthday cleaning, though I think you really enjoy doing that! My idea of a great birthday is not having to lift a finger in my house on my birthday!! I REALLY hope your toilet doesn't clog on your birthday! Yuck!!

Smiles!
Dawn

Birthdays are a big thing in my family. Growing up we had a nice dinner with immediate family members on the actual birthday, then we got a "family birthday party" AND a "friend birthday party", and then when we visited my mom's side of the family (Which we only did twice a year because they lived in a different state) we celebrated everybody's birthday with another party... So all in all, we celebrated each birthday 4 times each year.

Now that we are all grown up, my siblings and I still get a nice dinner with immediate family members on the actual birthday and a bigger party at grandma's house. My husband thinks we're all crazy! :)

I still hope to continue this with our son

I can plunge a toilet like an expert. My son (on the autism spectrum) has also had gastrointestinal issues since he was a toddler. He freakin' clogs those toilets on a weekly basis. Sorry, TMI, I know. You should see some of the $h17 I have to put up with...

Birthday? I don't celebrate it unless *I* make the dinner reservations or buy/make my own cake. That's ok. I don't like to be reminded of how old I'm getting.

Whenever possible, I take off for the weekend closest to my birthdate. By "take off" I mean I grab a friend to two and leave for a long weekend at a resort somewhere. I started doing that after my youngest was weaned. My husband is an excellent father, so I have no qualms about not being at home to handle whatever might come up. If it won't work out to have a mini-vacation, I try to plan something else enjoyable with friends for a day. This past year though, my birthday was much like yours. I couldn't get away and my alternate plans fell through at the last minute, then my husband got called into work. So yay. lol

It took awhile, but I convinced my husband to try a man-weekend with his friends too. They share similar interests, so shipping them off to a convention or something was a great idea. I hope he can do it again this summer.

My kids used to have really big parties when they were little, a combo of friends & family. Now one of them chooses to have a party with a bunch of friends and no family, while the other generally has a family party, or a small thing with one or two friends.

On my birthday, I see my mother (because I believe that parents should be able to put their hands on their children on the children's birthdays) and then my husband takes me to dinner (just the two of us).

I never plunge a toilet. When I was single, I "had a guy" for that. Now that I'm married, I've got a guy for that.

Happy birthday to you!

Meh. Birthdays are overrated. I have one next week and I just want the day to myself to go shopping, eat lunch with my mom- you know do the things I never get to do because I'm constantly wearing one of my many hats. We've taken more of this approach with the kids, also. Whatever they want to do on their day. We've foregone the party a year deal. Instead we go to the zoo, or eat ice cream for breakfast. Whatever floats their boats! Ain't it the way it should be?
