Hand-Vac Recommendation

Hi Ladies,
I am thinking about getting a hand-vacuum and am wondering if you can recommend one. My mom had a Dustbuster when I was young, and I remember after a year or two, it petered out on suction. I am guessing they've changed some in 20 years! :) I am looking for one that is cordless/rechargeable, and can pick up anything from tiny saltine-cracker dust to cheerios. Not sure if they make ones to pick up "wet" stuff (like fruit chunks) but that would be on my wishlist also. Thanks!

What can I do next?

Get a Shark -- we love ours. They are available at Bed Bath and Beyond. It has stronger suction and lasts much longer.

We got a Dyson hand vac. Expensive, but worth every penny. It will suck up just about anything and has two interchangeable nozzeles. One for crevecise and one for general cleaning. The great thing about it is that it is masculine so your husband will want to use it too! haha and we all know that any help from them we can get is fantastic!! Like I said, it is spendy, but I don't regret a dime we spent on it.

I LOVE my KONE vacuum... think it is by dirt devil - The only problem that I have found is that it is kind of loud. We keep the base plugged in and then the vacuum is cordless when you take it out of the base. As far as the "wet" chuncks go - my dog usually eats that first but I do pick up the ones that are left then vacuum the crumbs up after him. It is GREAT for dog hair! My sister-in-law has the dirt devil broom vac and she likes that a lot. Might be better for the wet stuff.

I have a Dirt Devil Ultra and love it. It's not cordless, but has a long cord, and the suction is amazing. It has an attached hose for the bigger chunks, but usually the spin brush picks it all up. I highly recommend it. I've had it for 3 years now and it's not faltered (knock on wood) once, and if it did, I would have no problem buying another.

i just got one for mothers day and i love mine! it can be found at walmart for $40. it is cordless, we wall mounted the charger so it it by the kitchen table! black and decker dust buster 14.4 volts. it has two filters one you was and the other you replace. not sure on that cost yet. i have a friend that recommended the dust buster kind with a higher voltage. suction decreases as the filter gate dirty, but just take it out and bang the big chunks off and when it is getting full.
it is dry only. my husband said there was a wet/dry one he was thinking about but said that those kind dont usually last too long. and i would think that you woul want to wipr fruit chunks up with a lysol wipe so the area is not stickey as we head into fruit fly season! good luck!

I have a Pronto 2 in 1. I LOVE it. It is light weight and cordless. It rests on a charger. You can pop out the "dust buster" part of it and use it that way too!!

Hi S., I have a dustbuster that I got at KMart - it is a wet/dry model and does a good job. Even picks up dog hair. It's a cordless and chargeable. It was about $35.
I remember the old ones too. They've improved them.
Good luck!

We recently purchased a Shark hand vac. It isn't cordless (but does have a long cord) and it does have a beater brush that spins--so it might not be the best for picking up small items on your kitchen floor. But it does have incredible suction and works great on our carpeted stairs and around the baseboard of our kitchen. It cost around $40 and we purchased it from Walmart. It's working great for us at our house!

Oh S.! You speak my language! All my friends think I'm strange because - not only do I have a hand vac - but I use it probably twice a day! I had a dustbuster forever and it worked great, until one day it no longer held a charge. Now I have a Dirt Devil Vibe. It looks just like a dustbuster. The newer technology lets you keep it on the charger all the time without it being bad for the battery. I had an outlet installed inside a kitchen closet where I keep all my cleaning supplies. That way, I can just go under the table quickly when the kids are done eating, or "arting" or whatever mess they are making. I also have a lot of wood floors, so I swiffer all the time. When I have a pile, I found that the Dirt Devil is a quick, clean way of picking it up and I don't have to mess with a dust pan. The Vibe as an attached, pop-out piece that allows you to reach into small crevices, too. You'll love it. Finding new filters is a pain, but you hardly ever need them.

I have a Kone and personally dislike it. It's suction is horrible compared to other brands, I have a hard time getting crumbs picked up with it. Two of my brothers each have one and they both also dislike them... my daughter (2 years old) spilled a few chips (like 5 chips) on the floor and smashed them and the Kone took about 10 mins to clean up the mess. To me the point of a cordless hand-vac is to get the small messes quickly so you don't have to lug out the big one.

On the plus side I love the look of it but since it does not work well I am back in the market for a new one. I am interested in what others recommend as well!

I have had the Dirt Devil Kone for just over a year now and LOVE it. It's not that bad looking plugged in and charging, hasn't lost any suction and is actually quite powerful. I've had a few others that haven't been as impressive. The Kone is my recommendation!
