Try the Aveda Brilliant line of hair products. The universal styling creme especially works very well on bi-racial hair. Hope this helps.

I have had good luck with all the Silken Child Products. You can find them at Sallies Beauty Supply. Biracial hair needs alot of care but is beautiful when taken care of.

Hi D.,

I have a 3.5 yo biracial boy that I had the same issue with. He has mostly big fluffy curly hair but it frizzes too. I have been using Paul Mitchell (red products) and I have been very happy with it. They have one product that helps manage the curliness and another that "freezes" the curl in place without hardness. If you want the exact names of the products (since I don't have them in front of me, I cannot tell you right now), just let me know.

I bought them at Target and Walmart sells it too!

Go to Walmart and ask one of the African American persons that work there to help yoi. Make sure the child is with you. Kmart sells those products as well. You can even check for yourself in the ethnic hair section of any drug store.

My child is also bi-racial. Her hair is smooth and fine like mine, with beautiful tights ringlet curls. I keep it as simple and inexpensive as possible, incorporating information I've researched regarding caring for curly hair.

~ No hair needs to be washed to often, especially curly hair. So we use shampoo once, maybe twice a week.

~ Never use a brush on curly hair, unless you've straightened it.

~ Never comb curly hair unless its damp or wet. We spray it with a very diluted mixture of Aqua Tonic (a great natural hair protector I found at a store called Dollar Zone) and H2O until the hair is pretty damp. Then use a real wide toothed comb (which should used on any type hair when wet). Starting at the ends and working to the root, I work out any tangles. Giggling the comb quickly in a left/right motion really helps.

~ Back to Basics basic Texture 'Get Curly' curl enhancing shampoo is good. Not sure if it's still sold, for I found it at Big lots 2 yrs ago. I put the shampoo in lotion dispenser. It really helps it last longer. I've had this bottle over 2 yrs and only 1/3 of it is gone. Now the bottle I use doesn't dispense a large amount either. But I don't use much, about 4 pumps.

~ We use Pantene Pro-V Hydrating Curls Conditioner. I leave it on the hair as long as possible, but at least 5 minutes.

~ To really help hold the moisture in, I periodically use Olive or Coconut Oil on it. You only need a very small amount at a time on your hands, rub together, then apply to the ends of the hair. This may also be applied to a dry scalp.

~ This tip is great for everyone's hair. Use a mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar & water (50:50 ratio), as a rinse after 1 shampoo. If you use a lot of product, you may increase the ACV. Letting it rest on your hair a few min while bathing. Then follow up with a light shampoo to wash the ACV smell away. This washes away all build up on your hair, without stripping.

~ To help decrease tangles that occur while sleeping, we use a mesh hair cap and comb (as noted above) and braid. We leave the braid up on the weekends to conserve on time, energy, product, and the occurrence of tangles.

My daughter's hair never looks dry or frizzy. I hope something here may be of use to someone. I look forward to reading through more replies and checking out products others have mentioned here.

She really likes the Curly Q coconut dream conditioner.
She has also quit shampooing her hair so often. She has quit using any products with sulfates.

Try the Carol's Daughter products. Every curly hair I know swears by them. They will have to be mail ordered, but all my Florida, all parts, find it worth it. You can google Carol's Daughter. The company/store is based out of Brooklyn, NY.

Good Luck and God Bless.

My daughter is 5 and also biracial. She has extremely tight, kinky curls. I found the most help at www.naturallycurly.com If you can figure out her curl type (my daughter's is 3C/4A), they have product suggestions for her type.

I have heard great things about the "Mixed Chicks" line of products.

http://www.mixedchicks.net/

My daughter is biracial, and her hair is very curly but fine; For detangling and styling, I mix a spray bottle of water and leave in conditioner (I use Garnier Fructis; it is inexpensive, smells creat, and works like a charm. I usually only mix ~about~ 1 tsp. with 8-10 oz water ( I don't measure).. THis is great, because you can adjust the formula to fit her hair needs. As you probably know, her hair styles best when wet, and the available "spray detanglers" just don't cut it!

If I could say one more thing, it would be don't wash her hair too often; 2-4 x per month is good in the winter (when she probably isn't playing outside anyway).. and 1-2 times per week in the hotter months.

I hope this all helps! Please feel free to contact me if you need any other advice!

Peace.
J.

Hi D.,

Please make sure whatever you decide to use is non-toxic to little ones. Even some of the "baby" shampoos have carcinogens and not only do neurological damage but can even cause cancers. Quaternium-15 is a formaldehyde releasing agent and is commonly used as a perservative in baby products. It is a known cancer causing agent. I use a line of products that are safe and work very well if you're interested. All of their shampoos are safe and you can choose the one that suits her hair the best. Feel free to get in touch...

D., I have very curly hair, and it is very frizzy. I don't mind the curls but to tame my frizz I only use Arbonne hair shampoo and conditioner and then I use another conditioner I found at the salon, I think it starts with an R....and is a "butter treat" I leave it on for 5 or 6 minutes and rinse out. I love it! I would find the name but right now my hubby is asleep. I'll try to send it to you. good luck! Oh, also to help the curls, instead of blow drying I pull it back at the nape of my neck with a pony tail holder, tucking the bottom into it so it's almost a bun....and let it dry that way. It takes some time but it helps to straighten out the curls without using my flat iron so much.

Go to Carol's daughter website. They have tons of product recommenations and testimonies from mother with biracial children who have curly hair. They also sell their products at Sephoria however, you can read the discription of the products on Carol's Daughter website to find out which would be best suited for you.

Hi, D.,

I do not honestly know if this will work on a bi racial child or not but my mom used it to tame our very curly sometimes frizzy hair when we were little. It is called Dippity Do

Good luck,

Hi D.,
I don't know about tame, but there is a hair oil moisturizer that is really good for black hair which includes biracial curly hair. It is called Pink Oil Moisturizer. You could also use the Tangle free Just For Me hair spray. Check the asian hair supply stores. They usually have excellent sections for black hair. Many of the products will show pictures of different types of hair including the soft curly hair you speak of. I am black and have used these products, and my baby daughter is biracial. I hope this helps.

First let me say that hair is hair, black, white, bi-racial, whatever. I am no expert by any means but I'll give you a little background so that you will understand my advice. My husband is black. I am black but with an obvious diversion somewhere down the line. Therefore my children are black with what looks like "bi-racial" hair. My best hair stylist has been a white lady because she understood my first statement. I, too, recommend Carol's daughter. They have a product called "Hair Milk" that is really good, light weight, smells good, and it's natural. I have found that using Just For Me or Pink Oil Moisturizer leaves too much residue on the hair and makes the problem worse in the end. Another product that I have heard good things about is Miss Jessie's but I have not had a chance to try it yet. I think it would be better is your child's hair is curly but a little more coarse. If your child's hair is curly but still fine, I would suggest The Original Little Sprout as an alternative to Carol's daughter. It is also natural, smells good, and they have a whole line. All of these products are more pricey than Just for Me or Pink Oil but I think it's worth it. You can google any of their names. They all have websites. Good Luck!

I have a 3.5 year old bi-racial daughter with very curly hair that is silky right after we 'wash' it but gets very dry very quickly. The only products we have found that work, and work very well, are Miss Jessie's. We love them and use almost all of them. We do not wash her hair (or use any soap on her due to her very dry skin). To clean her hair, we rinse it well with warm water then deep condition it with the Rapid Recovery Treatment. We do this twice a week. Depending upon how she wants her hair styled, I will use one of the other products, our favorite being the purple Curly Pudding. Every day I comb or brush her hair to keep it neat and add some Baby Butter Cream to keep it soft, managable, and moisturized. Plus all of the products smell heavenly! You get them online at www.missjessies.com or in Charlotte at 33 Fingers Salon or LockStar Salon.
