Hair Coloring Kit for Men to Cover Gray

My husband's salt'n pepper hair has spread from the sideburns to the rest of his head. Could you recommend a 'home' coloring kit for men's hair? He has short but thick wavy hair. We want something really easy to use, least-messy, and fool-proof. He's not trying to color all the gray out, just make the gray invasion less obvious? Thanks for any recommendation, we've never used anything before so all of the different types of products out there are baffling.

What can I do next?

Try a coloring shampoo that leaves deposits of color in the hair. My mom does hair and recommends this to her male friends.

My husband buys "Just For Men" and takes it with him when he gets his hair cut. The lady who cuts his hair also applies the color for him. (I don't let him do it at home because it gets ALL OVER the shower and towels!) He has thick, coarse, curly hair (he is half African-American) which I'd think would be hard to color, but it comes out looking great! He gets his hair cut every couple of weeks so it doesn't really have time to fade in between colorings.

The mens stuff is nasty! I use the woman's hair color on my husband and it works just fine. Good Luck!

My hubby uses the "Just for Men" stuff - he is from Morocco so his hair is very thick, coarse and curly and it works on him. It stains your towels, etc. so be sure to give hubby funky old towels to use - you know men they just do their thing and don't think about stains or the mess. ;)
I've got $300 worth of egyptian cotton white towels that now have ugly brown spots all over them. Not that I'm bitter or anything... ;)

Hi M.,
Go with the kit for men. Since he's not trying to cover all of it- he should be fine. There is the kit for the head & the facial hair- those should work fine. Follow all the directions, make sure you do the allergy test first, & then use the product. Worst case scenario? It might be a little dark. Use the darkest brown versus black or the closest to his own hair color. Reason I say that? Look at Billy Mays on tv- the spokesperson for Oxy-clean...too dark! Hubby can always color an inconspicuous area where it isn't noticeable.
I wish you luck!
J.

Hi M.,

My husband uses "Just for Men" brush in hair color. They have stuff for the whole head, and a different one for just sideburns, mustaches, and beards. My hubby uses it all the time. It's pretty easy to use, and doesn't take a lot of time.

Take care!

Hi M.,
I don't have a clue about hair color, I just wanted to say there is something very dignified and sexy about men with graying hair. It's a personal opinion, I know, but there it is. I personally feel we as parents earn every gray hair we get, and it's best to let it take it's course naturally because that's how we look best....natural! Hurrah for gray! I have 4 kids and I've earned the right to have my little grays poking out here and there! It proves I'm a real mom with real kids and real love who's put in real work raising them! That's all...but of course the choice is yours and your husband's. Sorry I don't have any actual hair color advice....just encouraging you and your hubby to wear what you've earned proudly. It's normal to gray, and by starting to cover it up, it's like starting to shave. He won't ever be able to feel like he can quit. Anyway, that's all just opinion! Good luck finding what you need!

Never do home hair coloring. There's nothing worse than a good looking guy with a little grey, who has that "Grecian Formula" brown from time to time (it fades). If he really wants to cover the grey, then go to a salon and have a pro take care of it. Grey is sexy--he should keep it!

Hi M.,

Two very handsome brunette men in my life colored their gray hair. My brother and my uncle. My brother's came out yellowish (from a salon) and my uncle's turned red on him. Both looked SOOOO unatural that they looked kinda clownish to me. They were so handsome before and the coloring just ruined the dignified look that they had. Women can get away with it but on men it just looks silly.
Same with a freind who wore a toupe'. He wore that stupid thing for decades. He turned 40 and took it off, he looks SOOO much better now. He looks handsome now, as before, he didn't. Something looked "off".
