Hello, I'm a first time mom looking for advice on how to keep my 3 month old baby's hair moisturized. She's African American. I was told to put baby oil by some family members and castor oil by others. The baby oil doesn't keep your hair moisturized for long and the castor oil is too heavy. I really need help with this. Thanks :)

Baby's hair is very delicate.Be careful not to put many chemicals in it.I have known Pink Lotion always works and is not to heavy or chemically bad for baby's hair.
For African American baby hair, I find that baby vaseline and/ or a leave-in conditioner for children works wonders.
Hi K.,
I have a baby boy born in NOvember. When he was 3 months like your daughter he had really dry scalp, I think they call it cradle cap. The doctor recommended cortizone 10% which helped; his skin & hair is much better now. Ihave also used baby oil, cocoa butter, shea butter which works well now, cradle cap if that's what it is needs something more medicated. My other friends use Carol's Daughter products.
Hope this helps,
M.
hey my nephew african american and we had the same prob with his hair.we use that pink lotion that adults use its not to heavy and it does the job.it takes a couple of days to really get in there though...i mean its a thought...let me know
hi, i asked a girl i used to work with what she used on her daughter's hair (i remembered she had such nice hair when i last saw her).... she sent me a link for the website she orders from. she said all the products are pretty good, but the stuff for the hair is great. there's the exact one she uses on the link, but there's also one for extra dry hair (i'm not sure which one you would need) you can also look through the rest of their products if you're interested...but i just hope it helps. good luck on finding what works best for you!

Carol's Daughter has some really great products for adults as well as children. Hair Milk is the best product for a child's hair. It is pricey but I feel well worth it. They also have customer testimonials. here's the link: http://www.carolsdaughter.com/prodinfo.asp?number=03-2006 (just cut and paste it into your browser)
I had the same problem with my daughter when she was younger. For a while I just used her baby lotion on her hair. Some companies like Dark and Lovely and Motions make products for childrens hair. Maybe you should look into that.
Try Vitamin E oil from GNC. I had to use that in my daughter's hair when she was that age. When she was born, she had very thick curly hair. She is now 5 yrs. old and her hair is still very thick. She and I exchange a lot of words when I am doing her hair. :-)
Jojoba Oil is an oil that is closest to our own natural skin oils. It absorbs nicely - you dont want anything that just sits on her scalp -
However for my daughter - i use the Pink Lotiom - but for KIDS - it is not as oily - you want to use sparingly so young - but it works nicely- I put it on her hair out of the tub and comb it thru.
Good luck
Ali
Hey...hope i could help you with this...I am Dominican and my husband is Haitia, so you know my baby has very very curly hair, and what i've been using is " Soft & Precious" moisturizing creme hair dress...It moisturizes & softens with a beautiful sheen. Dont keep on putting baby oil on your baby because what it does its that the oil kinda dries the babies hair too much...But this one will work, I got it at walgreens. But you can get it at duane reid or anything like that.
Hi K.,
I'm African American and my husband is half Asian half Italian. Our daughter is a month old and the advice that you have gotten on Carol's Daughter is on target. They have some of the best products out there for children and adults, so you can get something for your daughter and something to treat yourself as well! Take care and good luck with your little beauty.
hey there! is your daughter's hair long enough to braid? i've found that is the best way to keep my son's hair soft and manageable. when he was that young (he's 10 months now) i used baby oil and just had to comb through it everyday. you could use something adults use like pink oil or something but i bet it'll just weigh it down too. untill her hair grows out and gets thicker you just have to work with it as it is. hope that helped.
Hey K.,
These ladies have given you great advice.
I'm Puerto Rican and my hubsand is African American has well.
I had similar issue with our Daughter now 16 months. She has really curly hair and the baby oil didn't help much. I use the olive oil and sometimes the coconut oil, they work great on her hair.
Try some of these ideas I sure you find one that is right for you.
Hey K.--I use Nature's Blessing--it works great!! You could also check out any of Carol's Daughter products as well she has a baby line now.

Hi K.,
You should try Pink Oil Hair Moiturizer. You can get it at the beauty supply store, I belive it's made by Luster's. Also, try using a conditioner or shampoo with conditioner like the Johnson's Extra Conditioning baby shampoo.
Let me know how it goes,
S.
what about olive oil? a girl i work with uses olive oil in her hair
Hi K.
Use a natural hair oil one with tea tree to cleanse and moisterize the scalp is important.

Hi... what about mineral oil? I'm Italian so I really don't know if there is something special for the hair...but mineral oil seems to work on lots of things.
hope it works!!
Hi K.:
I am Hispanic and my daughter's father is African American. I faced the same thing with my daughter. I used a traditionally Hispanic and Caribbean product (if you live in an area where there are Hispanics, the likelihood is that it is carried in the local pharmacy or botanica). I used coconut oil (you can get it in a pomade or in liquid form). I prefer to use the pomade because it feels lighter and it doesn't have any other components, just pure coconut oil. Hope this works for you.
Hi K.,
My name is D.. I also live in SI. My son had a similar problem when he was a baby. He is african american as well. I had the same thing with the baby oil, it would also stain things. Johnson & Johnson (I believe) makes something called baby oil lotion. It worked wonders for his full head of hair, and also helped get rid of the "cradle cap" on his head. Hope this helps. I would imagine you could find this in kmart, babies r us, or maybe a grocery store. if you can't maybe try to go to their website. Good luck. D.
My friend went threw the same situation. There are products by Curls and Curly Q that work wonders. Never use products that contain mineral oil or pertrolatum. Use stuff that contains Jojoba, coconut oil and Avocado oil. Also try Shea butter. Hope this helps!
