Guitar Hero or Wii

Hi Moms,

I have 4 yr. old and 6 yr. old boys... I'm thinking Christmas already. We have no electronic "things" for them outside of a computer. They love music and guitars. So rather than an electric guitar I was thinking Guitar Hero. I've never seen this in action. So, what do you moms think of it? Do I buy the system stand alone, or with a wii? Or just a wii and not guitar hero. I want to ensure that spending this much $ it will be something they won't grow tired of. Also, if you bargain shopped, where did you find the lowest price. THANKS!

What can I do next?

You will need some sort of gaming system to play Guitar Hero; options are Wii, Playstation or X-Box. Guitar Hero is going to be hard for the 4 yr old and the 6 yr old will struggle with it also.

My suggestion is start with the Wii and get an age apporiate game and then in a few years get Guitar Hero. My daughter is 4 yrs old and we do have two games that she plays on the Wii and she kind of plays along with the mario cart and sports ones but they still are a little abover her age (I have seen kids her age do the games easliy but they spend everyday on the Wii where as my daughter gets to use it 1-2 times a week, for now). We do have Guitar Hero for Playstation 2 and LOVE it, my daughter watches and will fake play but there is no way she could actaully do it AND half the songs I would never let any one under 12 and some songs under 16 hear.

Wii.

You can do both on it and so much more.
We have both.
Its both real fun... as a side note, YOU and Hubby can use the Wii too, to work out... they have a great work out program... and other real fun games/sports games/arcade games for it too.
You will need to buy a Wii console platform... to operate any Wii games on it like Guitar Hero.
Or just buy a Wii... and it comes with games, its called a "bundle" when you buy it.

No matter what, if you want to get/play the Guitar Hero... you NEED to get the "platform" in order to play it, whether that is the Wii, Playstation or Xbox.
You can't play the game or any game.. unless you have the said platform to play it on.
The Wii and Xbox is SOOOOOO much more versatile... and fun. We have the Wii, Playstation 2, and Xbox.

My Husband plays Guitar Hero... and so do my kids.

For buying it: look at Walmart, Amazon, Game Stop... Best Buy.
They all have sales on it... at varying intervals.

ALL the various platforms... have games for kids or adults. AND they are rated. Game Stop www.gamestop.com displays the rating of the games per age group.

good luck,
Susan

We have guitar hero and it seems to be appropriate for older kids. I'm not sure if they have kid friendlier ones but the one we have is only suitable for my teen, if even that. =) My sister has a wii and it seems better for kids, IMO. But I sure love guitar hero!! LOL

I'd suggest a Wii and lego rock band.
My 5 yr old and 8 yr old love to play and it has a " very easy" mode that is no fail.
Unfortunately it's getting harder to find the instruments for the Wii. But check toys r us and game stop/ EB games.

Wii is great for kids. Guitar Hero can be a little racy and difficult though for young ones, though it is fun. Go to Best Buy and check it out yourself.

If it were me, I would get the Wii now and get Guitar Hero in a couple of years. You can also stream Netflix on the wii and they have lots of games that are fun for the whole family and kids that age.

We don't have a Wii, we have an Xbox, but our inlaws do and the kids love it.

Gamestop has pretty good deals, or you could also get some used ones on Ebay for cheaper. Only you usually wouldn't get the warranty unless the seller is provided the original receipt (you have to ask them about that, some advertise it though.)

Guitar Hero is for either playstation (or is it Xbox?) or Wii, so you have to have one of those game consoles to use it. Guitar Hero World Tour is VERY cool because it has several different instruments and the mike so the whole family can play!

I work at Hastings, which is an entertainment store (if you don't have one in your area. lol)

Guitar hero is for the Playstation (2 or 3), Xbox (origional or 360) or Wii. If you are looking for a deal, I would try to find a used Playstation 2 (I think we sell them for about $150... can't remember for sure though...) You might even be able to find a used copy of Guitar hero. The nice thing is that the PS2 is starting to go "obsolete"... So while there are still TONS of games out for it, they are going to be cheaper ($10-20 a game as opposed to $50-60) but still work for quite a while. My cousin's kids (same ages) loved the racing games. Im not sure if a 4 year old would be able to handle guitar hero though... but they do have games made for younger children that you could look into. Happy hunting! :)

~Also... as for the systems, would you be only using it for the kids to play once in a while? PS2 would be the best way to go... If you want one with blu-ray capabilities and such, PS3.... If you and hubby will be using it as well, or if the kids will play it a LOT, then Wii is best... Xbox is ok, but a lot of people have issues with them ruining their games (a slight bump will cause the "ring of death" on the game, which is NOT repairable...not good with young children)

I think the Wii is going to have the best options for you. They have lots of family friendly games. They looked pretty silly to me until I tried them. Who knew video bowling could be entertaining? And definitely get Guitar Hero. It is so much fun (and teaches rhythm, coordination, blah, blah, blah. It does, but it's just fun!) I think the other systems (PlayStation, Xbox) are geared more for serious gamers who tend to like those violent games (that my husband loves).

We have Guitar Hero for Wii. My 9y is a pro at it and my 4y daughter loves to try and play along. She doesn't get all the pieces right, but she thinks she's doing well. soo...

The way I did it last Christmas was this - Black Friday sale! Sears had GH World Tour with a wireless guitar for $50. I had family that was going first thing so I sent them with the money. Then CVS had a GH Legends of Rock III with a wireless guitar on sale for $50! So I got both sets, gave one set to my son, one to hubby. Once you buy the guitar controller (you can play with a regular controller but not as much fun!) then you just buy the various games.
