Grocery Store Baby Rules . . .

Weird question: when you have your baby in the cart when you go to the grocery store and you get to check-out, what do you do? Whenever this time comes I panic. I have seen other moms leave the LO in the cart as they check out. But then do they switch carts when they're loading the groceries? What's the rule here, moms? The things you have to learn as a mom! sigh....

OK, sorry - need to clarify. Yes, when you have a cart with lots of groceries and they bag them for you. Last time I was at the store, I left LO in the cart. and the checker was scanning stuff, and I realized the bagger was putting the bagged groceries in a NEW cart, since the checker still had mine... So I felt like a huge IDIOT, like I did something wrong. Then I had to take my guy out of the old cart, and back into the new one! Just wondering if this was normal! I guess I should have said something!

What can I do next?

I'm confused, why would you switch carts? The baby just stays put, you're right there the whole time while the groceries go onto the belt and are loaded back into the cart, right?

I left kiddo in the cart and only once did someone at Costco start loading my things into the cart in front of my son. I just said "That's one's mine" - pointing to my son. Apologizes, small laughs, and I got my groceries and my kid in the same big cart. No worries, mama. No one will accidentally roll away with your baby while you watch.

I am assuming this is a Costco, Sams Club kinda situation? When my kids used to sit in the cart they would always pull the cart through and load the one with the kids. It is not like they are required by law to switch carts it is just easier to make sure they didn't forget to scan something.

I'm a little confused. Why would someone switch carts to load groceries? I just leave the LO in the front of the cart and while we check out, I make sure the cart is in front of me so she is in plain view. When I load my groceries in the car, I put her in the carseat first.

I leave DD in the cart. I unload everything onto the conveyor and then pick up my bags when the cart is empty. I use the same cart. If I absolutely need to load something onto the cart before the basket is empty, I put things like milk and cat litter on the bottom, under the basket. DD is 3 and I haven't had an issue, even when I did self-checkout or bagged my own. Just keep an eye on the baby and make sure you use the strap or carrier. Sometimes I just wore her in a carrier and used a hand basket.

Some stores have handheld scanners and you can bag and scan as you go and then do a super quick self-checkout at the end. No cart swapping needed, but you do need your own bags.

When my DD wasn't walking, I left her in the cart. They only loaded my stuff in a new cart once before, and I just switched her.

Once she started standing on her own though, I would pull her out and have her stand with me while they rang me up. It's really nice too, because now at 17 months she knows to stay right by me.

I stood in front of the cart and put those groceries on the belt first. then pushed the cart through and had them put the groceries in the same cart. I have actually never had them put the stuff in a different cart except at aldi's and if you ask they will just wait and pull your cart around

I NEVER left my baby alone in the cart for risk of a fall - whether car seat or sitting. I would always take her out with me

Now that I have an older child (almost 4), I feel okay leaving her sitting in my line of sight, while I pay. If the bagger uses a new cart, I just grab her out and stick her in the new one or have her walk. No need to feel self-conscious. They can see her in the cart!! They really should ask you where you want the bags, for crying out loud. I just think the baggers don't notice the kids at first.

I push the other cart out of my way, even if they are putting stuff in it. I always say something like, sorry, but that's not my cart. This one is mine. They jsut move them over.

Do you shop at a store that bags your groceries for you? I am a bit confused.
