Hi I was wondering, we have used the Simethicone drops commonly known as Mylicon drops for our two month old daughter since she was about 5 days old. She tends to have gas and refulx problems. We found the formual that works great for us so I know that's not the problem. A couple days a week though for two weeks know she suffers from relly bad reflux pain. I was wondering if any of you have found gripe water to be useful. I read up on it and it sounds like mom's recommoned it but the medical comminity doesn't really. A friend told me about probiotics but I am not sure that it's wise to put a two month old on that type of herbal supplement. Just curious what others have to say about Gripe water vs Simethicone drops. As for as the Simethicone drops we have used the Mylicon ones, Target brand and Little Tummies brand and they all seem to work the same. Oh and since she can have the drops up to 12 times a day we put them in some of her baby bottles, since she tends to be one very gassy little girl.

Lisa,

I used Gripe water with my son who had really bad reflux it seemed to help a little bit. He ended up being on prevacid (I don't know if I am spelling it right) but that is what the peds put him on and it was a lifesaver. He was on it until about a year old because after that he was eating table food and his reflux got better. I had to make my own baby food b/c the baby food was too watery for him. Hope this helps.

I used simethicone with our first baby's occasional gas, and it worked great for her. But our second baby is way more gassy, and the simethicone didn't seem to do ANYTHING for her. The gripe water doesn't completely get rid of her gas, but it definitely makes her more comfortable. I don't know whether it would work for reflux specifically, but it couldn't hurt. Actually, for reflux the probiotics might work better. I had to take antibiotics when our youngest was about a month old, and they tore her system up. She had really bad gas and diarrhea. I had to do something for her, so i broke open an acidophilus caplet and poured a little on her tongue several times a day. It worked really well, and pretty quickly. They're actually not herbal at all, but the gripe water is. The probiotics are just capsules full of the same active bacteria cultures that are found in most yogurt. It's the reason why Dr.s tell you to eat yogurt when you have yeast infections or diarrhea. It might be worth it to read up on them, because they might be a good safe, natural choice. Hope this helped :)

My first daughter had terrible reflux. We used Mylicon drops with just about every bottle. It helped to an extent. Like many other moms, I tried almost everything, including Gripe water. It did nothing for us. I saw no change in her and I gave it plenty of time to work. When she was about four months old, we finally had a referral to see a pediatric gastroenterologist who put her on Zantac to control her GERD. It worked like magic. She was a changed baby. She was on that for approximately 3 months and I weaned her off because her digestive system had matured enough that the reflux was no longer an issue. I would skip the Gripe water and see about a visit to a peds GI who might even be able to suggest something herbal instead of a prescription drug.

I've not tried the gripe water, as it came out after my son was already on the Zantac... but I second the person saying to get a refferal to a ped GI. If the Mylican isn't helping, it's probably more than just the gas, and imo should be evaluated by a specialist. Some Docs will reccommend after the initial on schedules dosing of zantac, to go to an "as needed" schedule, which works best for my son who's trying his best to outgrow the gerd, but still needs the help a few days a week.

My daughter also had gas and reflux issues and we found the gripe water to be very helpful. We started using it shortly after she was 6 weeks old and it seemed to help a lot. Our doctor said it all depends on the child. I would at least try it and see if it works for you.

My daughter had colic along with G.E.R.D.S (acid reflux). I tried everything! We gave her gripe water, but didn't really notice a difference in her behavior, but know others who swear by it. If you think your daughter is having a lot of reflux issues talk to your pediatrician. Ours put my daughter on Zantac after 3 months. She was like a completely different child. It made all the difference! Good luck:)

If your daughter has reflux and your ped knows this, I would get her Zantac. My DD had reflux. I suspected it from day 1, but my first ped pushed us off saying it was colic. I knew it was feeding related because she only screamed at the site of a bottle.

I got a new ped around 3 months old, she gave us Zantac right away, and we had a new baby! Before the Zantac I tried Gripe Water and gas drops, no help!

Our son had similar problems. Tried the gripe water 1 time and he ended up in ER but we don't know if that was the cause. We found this device that he slept on for the 1st 8 months that helped with his sleeping and his reflux. It was wonderful. He was put on an incline of 30 degrees, strapped in and it helped. He had stopped breathing on 2 occasions prior to us getting this wonderful device and now he is fine.
I would skip the gripe water and even the mylecon (I don't think either work)

Hi Lisa ~
I have to tell you first that my 1st born was colic, I had no relief for the first 4 months of his life. the only way he was fine was if I held him tight to me for pressure on his tummy. I then had twins, they didn't have colic (thank you god!) but they did have periodic tummy problems. When they were only 1 month old I purchased Gripe Water, It works wonders, the doctors told me that mylicon doesn't really do anything (yeah right, just like they don't get a fever with an ear infection), so when I heard about the Gripe Water I tried it. I still use it on them when they have a tummy ache and they are now 2 1/2. So I would have to say get some Gripe Water, it may cost a little more but its definitly worth it. As for the amount to give your daughter, I would start out with just a little and give it to her during the day for the first time. I'm sure you will love it. I hope this helps.

Hey Lisa,

My daughter had gas and spit up a lot when she was first born until about 2 months old. It didn't seem abnormal as we were having difficulty getting her to latch on correctly so I figured she was getting lots of air with her food...plus I let down really fast so she was eating fast. Anyway...we did lots of research and decided to try the gripe water and our lives were forever better! She stopped screaming for long periods of time and slept better all around. I believe we started giving it to her around 6 or 8 weeks. I'm sure you've heard this, but the Mylicon type drops only treat gas bubbles in the stomach directly where as the gripe water treats the entire digestive system. I would still consult with your doctor, mine said either was fine...he reccomended Mylicon, but thought gripe water would be fine too.

We were very happy with the results we got with the gripe water for the temporary problem we were having. If you do think it is acid reflux though, make sure you're talking with your doctor. I know they prescribe lots of different options to infants and suggest different formulas and all that. Good luck!!! Gassy babies are no fun!
