Good old fashioned Winnie the Pooh by AA Milne. You can get it through the library. It is read in a lovely British accent. My kids listened to it hundreds of times. I think I have the thing memorized.
Hey moms,
My little girl has given up naptime....woe is me! She is great at just having a quiet time though where she stays in her room and plays quietly (with ponies or barbies or books) for some rest. This is fine with me, but I wanted to explore some books on tape for her to listen to at this time. She will be in pre-k next year and this is what they do, so I think that will get her prepped for how they handle their rest time. She loves books and can lay there looking at them for hours, lol....We are just starting teaching her to read so that will still be awhile to go for that. Any great books out there on tape or cd or mp3 that you can recommend? She is 3.5 and of course loves anything princess, but generally loves all kid's books. I would love some books that come with the cd and a book too so she can "read" along. Thanks for the suggestions!
Thanks moms for all the wonderful suggestions! Duh--I totally forgot about the library carrying this stuff. I am definitely making a trip there this weekend and will look for some of the titles suggested. I just hated to spend money on some and then find out the narrator was totally droll and have it be wasted...this way I can test before I buy. Thanks again and keep the suggestions coming if you think of any more =)

We love the Mercy Watson audiobooks by Kate DiCamillo. They are beginning chapter books with big colorful pictures, so they're fun to "read" along too. You should try your local library too. They should have a selection of what's called "storybags", plastic bags with both the book and the cd or tape inside.
My daughter has "Snowy Day", "The Lion King" and some other disney stories on tape. She is into Fairy Tale Dora as well.
If you have a cassette recorder you could actually make some of your own. Her quiet time could also include some learn to read books to help her get a head start for school.
Scholasitc book orders will many times have cds and books and sometimes are in sets of 4. The prices seem to be fairly reasonable. If you know anyone in a school setting that does Scholastic maybe you could order through them. My preschool used to do them also. Just a thought.
Have you tried your local library? The libraries here have a HUGE amount of books on tape/cd with the companion books. For free!
We love Leo the Lightning Bug by Eric Drachman. It comes with a book and audio CD read by the author. He is not dry at all but a natural storyteller ( I would think you would have to be in order to be a childrens author.) The CD uses voices and sound effects as well. It has a tone to tell when to turn the pages. Good luck!!
There are tons of great books on tape/CD for young ones. Go to your local library and there is probably a whole section devoted just to books on tape. I know the Woodstock and Crystal Lake libraries do.
Another thing you can do is get a fun reading program like "Grandma and me" for your computer. This is fun to do during quite time. There are lots of fun reading software on the market for the young ones.
My daughter is four, and she loves the Mercy Watson books and audio books. There are two books on each CD, and each story is about 20-30 minutes long. The books are very easy to follow along with, too.
She also loves the Ramona books and audio books. Stockard Channing is the reader on the audio books, and she is amazing. She makes Ramona even more fun and interesting (if that's even possible). One book is generally split between two CD's and is about three hours long, so she would probably hear only part of the book during rest time.
We also listened to Alice in Wonderland recently, read by Cybill Shephard. This one may be a little old for your daughter yet, but it was great.
We get all from our library.
