The beach rocked! Good morning so far. Before getting ready for church, I was wondering if you guys knew today is not only the 10th anniversary of 9/11 but it's also Grandparents Day today? WIll you do anything towards that today? I'm going to both my grandpas a phone call, and have my boys call my parents, but it snuck up on me so that's all we'll do this year.
To the grandmas on the site: Happy Grandparents Day!

ETA: Thanks for the history, GrammaRocks. I didn't know that, but it sounds like an even better idea now. It's so easy in our society to forget how important the contributions our seniors can and do make. That's just given me a load of ideas on how to celebrate them now.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Gotta love those "anti Hallmark" commentsyou hear at any optional holiday like Valentines Day, etc. :) I don't think I've ever even seen a Hallmark card for today; it's just a day to remember and make a point to call or talk if you get busy and forget sometimes. When my grandma was alive, I made a big deal of it even though I was very close. Just because....she's a big deal to me. And my mom had no idea today was grandparents' day, and it rocked her world to have my 4 year old call and sing a little song to her and then wish her "happy grandma day, bugga!" I don't think there's any harm in having a special little day. Happy day everyone. :)

I didnt realize today was Grandparent's Day. Im a grama,, I should be celebrated! My grand daughter will be here later today so I will have her say it to me. She will want a cake with candles on it and think its a birthday.
I have some cookie dough and plan to make cookies and take to the fire station down the road for the 10 yr anniversary or 9/11. I know it will make me feel good to do something to remember what they do for us.

HAPPY GRANDPARENTS DAY TO ALL THE GRAMAS AND GRAMPAS!!

Thank you for letting me know about Grandparents Day. I'm going to celebrate that. Mine all live far away so a call will have to do.

I'm going to get something for the firestation down the road in honor of Sept. 11, but that's all I'm going to do. I worked in Manhattan in 2001. I am lucky that I didn't lose anyone. I am conscious of the day, but I refuse to turn it into an "anniversary" thing and get morose every year.

True, it was a horrible day, but there were also stories of live changes - people who were workaholics that changed their lives because of it, so I'm going to focus on bringing positive emotions to people and not watch any of the tv stuff.

Thank you! I am raising my youngest grandchild, so every day is a special day, and I plan to call and FB the rest of my grandchildren.

Also, Hallmark didn't invent Grandparents Day...Marian McQuade of Oak Hill, West Virginia, has been recognized nationally by the United States Senate, and by President Jimmy Carter, as the founder of National Grandparents Day. McQuade made it her goal to educate the youth in the community about the important contributions seniors have made throughout history. She also urged the youth to "adopt" a grandparent, not just for one day a year, but rather for a lifetime : )

I think Grandparents day always falls on the first Sunday after Labor Day. It's not a day that gets much recognition. I don't even recall seeing a Hallmark card commercial for it this year, lol. Anyway, it is a bummer that this year it fell on 9/11..... but that shouldnt happen again for 7 years now.
Thanks for the greeting :)

I hate that hallmark invented an official holiday in order to sell cards and make grandparents feel bad if their grandchildren don't remember them on 1 day. I've always felt like every day is grandparent's day. My grandchildren are a gift given to me by my children. A card on one specific day doesn't make me feel special. It's those 'Hey gram guess what I did at school today' phone calls that make me smile.
