Gps--separate Unit or on Phone

We are thinking of getting GPS. Would you recommend getting it on the phone or a separate unit? I haven't used one on a phone before but used a Garmin that came with a rental car. Wondering if anyone experience with other or any opinions.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much. There's a sale at Radio Shack for the Garmin unit that we were looking at so we bought one.

Definitely get a separate unit! I completely agree with Dawn ~ the separate unit is safer to view than the app on your phone. We have a Garmin and used it drive across the country this summer! SO worth it!!!

I agree, separate unit. Hubby & I have Garmin Nuvi 255W. Screen is much bigger than phones too!

We love ours, so easy & nice to have!

I like the garmin better than TomTom-but always, always , take a hard copy of the directions-even the reverse! Travel safely!

they both seem to use more battery power
unless you have a car charger i would suggest using the one on the car.
I used both in the past but have not used the 'on star' yet but i doubt it will drain your car battery.
i had to keep my phone charged in during the entire 2 hr trip, same with the Garmin i had taken a 4 hr trip with that and needed to charge it in the middle of the trip and that was going to my destination.
I hope this tip is helpful to you

My husband has a Garmin and loves it. I have an iPhone but haven't tried the GPS yet. We love the Garmin b/c it "talks" to you to let you know when your next turn is coming up. We also like to keep it in a holder on the dash so we can see it and it's "hands free." You may not have these 2 features with a cell phone.
