I just joined a gym and I don't want to pay for a trainer with times already getting a little tougher, they had a great deal though and ive been wanting to join for a while to get rid of the "mommy muffin". My ideal weightloss is 20lbs and I want to tone whats left. I only really know the elliptical and the bikes. What would make a good workout routine, how long on the elliptical and what should I do next? What has worked for you?

Hello S.,

My husband and I used a plan with the muscle magazine - health and fitness. Anyways it was great - we exercised 4 times a week - ate 6 simple meals a day and it was great. Most fitness magazines have plans inside them. Sparks.com online is a support groups you might find something there too.

These situation may essay to be a sinless affix to seemly uptake and preparation. Regrettably,I cerebrate set are achievement to use these point as a momentaneous cut to exploit better. You can't eat a pail of barbecued gallinacean, produce these shoes and try to get in move. It worthy doesn't price equivalent that.

I am not a trainer or a fitness 'guru' but I have attended many seminars, classes, etc on optimizing a workout. Getting the max benefit of an elliptical and/or bike boils down to reaching your Target Heart Rate.
Wikipedia has a lot of info but is a bit 'techy' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heart_rate
Another site which boils it down nicely is http://www.thewalkingsite.com/thr.html

Reaching your target heart rate and staying there for whatever amount of time is more important then just getting on a machine for the sake of getting on a machine and making yourself miserable - the nice thing about THR is that you will not 'burn out' or get too tired and yet you are maximizing your fat burning potential!

Also, if you do not want to work out try the South Beach Diet - it works.

I don't know if your gym offers them but if you have Zumba classes, take a few!! One of the moms I work for teaches some classes and it is latina type/samba music intergrated with dance and workout all in one! It will kick your butt the first few times but it is fun and you will burn off all parts of your body! :)

The best advice I can give for the mommy muffin is diet! diet! diet! My husband is a personal trainer (which is sometimes a blessing and sometimes it is not) Monitor your calories and your food choices. We have a food logging system that is working for me (lost 5 pounds and have 35 to go). I am really excited about it. Here is a 7 day activation code: 4RPT8Y Try it out. Food logging is not for everyone- but worth a try. Our website is www.phys1que.com on the home page click PHYS1QUE Nutrition. I would also suggest adding weight training into your routine. You could also just pay for 1 or 2 sessions with a trainer at your gym and they could show you proper form and give you some weight training you can add into your routine. Or you could do my favorite and do crunches on an exercise ball. It is easy for me to preach but I still struggle trying to get to the gym! Good luck to you!

I found that it was really helpful to pay for a personal trainer for just a few sessions so that they could help me set up a good routine that you can then continue on your own. This is really helpful if you are going to use the weight machines and/or free weights. I have also found that most gyms have a group fitness class that utilizes weights. At Bally's it is called "Body Pump". It is a great motivator to be part of a regularly scheduled group class. Good luck and good for you!

when i was pregnant with my first daughter i needed to get in to shape... so i did hirea trainer, but what i did was only meet with her ever 4-6 weeks. so she would set me up with a routine, then tweek it every so often. it wasn't nearly as expensive... and had the added benefit of being a motivating factor because one... i'd still see her at the gym at least weekly... and i would know i'd have to admit i wasn't exercising if i hadn't been going in between our sessions.

another idea, my friend does.. she looks up diff routines on-line or in magazines.... then does that routine for 4-6 weeks, then switches to a new one... keeping, adding, deleting exercisrs she likes or doesn't like. also, try different classes... even things you never thought you'd like... it keeps things interesting.
