Good Science and History Magazine Suggestions?

I want to have some more enrichment materials "lying" around for my 11 yo and 13 yo children as part of a delight directed or unschooling approach. I want material that will spark their interests, but do NOT want material that is dumbed down or watered down. I have already decided to get a crossword puzzle subscription for vocab and spelling enrichment.

Thanks in advance,

C.

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for all your wonderful suggestions! There are a few of your suggestions that I wasn't aware of that I think we are going to delve into and a few classics that I am going to grab up as well. Smithsonian's mag, Muse, Creation, and Answers in Genesis are all wonderful places to start for us and gives a well rounded view as well.

I am so thankful for the friend who told me about this site! Such a wealth of information and experience at a mouse click. What a wonderful group of ladies!

YEAH! Another unschooling family!! We have two kids who we unschool (11 y.o. girl and 12 y.o. boy), where do you live?!

This is so exciting. I would love to get together with somebody who can understand my vision on schooling!

I am in the S. Mesquite / Balch Springs area.

It seems to me like I have read where Smithstonian, and National Geographic have magazines for younger chldren. They may like the regular ones, they have some very good articles in them.

I would highly suggest checking out the book lists on AmblesideOnline.com for age appropriate (or below) books to have lying around. You can find most at the library. They have SO MANY great books, check out the free reading lists at the end of each grade, too. Even I love reading all of these, and so do my kids--even books you think they would hate or might seem silly--they love and learn from.

Have you ever heard of Dr. Hovind aka Dr. Dino. He has some awesome DVD's (and other materials) on Creation Science. None of this watered down crud, but solid fun science. We have a bunch of 'Highlights' DVD's from his seminar series. I could send you one for free, no problem, I've done it for my friends & family as well. Email me at ____@____.com if you'd like one!
PS: And oh yeah, I love those placemats you put on the table that have like Presidents of the US, Our Solar System, etc. They are a great fun learning tool to leave 'lying around.' =)

A really good childrens magazine is Kid's Nationl Geographics. My granddaughter loves that magazine and can't wait for it to come in the mail. She is 10 years old. It might be worth a try for your children.

A word of caution on Popular Mechanics or Popular Science. We love these two magazines but before I put them out for the kids to "discover" I tear out about 3 pages of ads in the back. They like to put male enhancement products ads on some of those pages. I have never found any articles mixed in or on the other side so they never miss the end of an article they wanted to read.

I enjoyed "Highlights" magazine when I was a child, I am not sure what it is like now. National Geographic has great photographs but the stories are pretty left-wing alarmist for my taste. National Geographic does have children's magazines too I think, but they probably also have the pathos bent that National Geo has.

I have looked up via google: Cricket, Muse...

Just Google "children's magazines" and you might get some options. Good luck and way to go! You sound like a great mom!

Smithsonian, National Geographic and Popular Mechanic were big in our house growing up. You might also throw in a Cooks Illustrated, I was recently impressed with the reading level. Before you buy a subscription check out your library to see if they have any, or maybe you can share with someone. My library always has Natl Geo from last year for 25 cents an issue in the bookstore.

I ordered some DVDs from the Institute for Creation Research and have since been receiving their magazine. It is filled with factual articles about great scientists and discoveries such as microbiologist Werner Arber, Nobel Laureate who worked in molecular genetics. Fascinating and easy to understand!!! Go to www.icr.org to get a glimpse.

National Geographic has a kids magazine that is very interesting and not that expensive. I enjoy it myself, and at their age, they may also enjoy the regular National Geographic. We also get a monthly Zoo Book magazine that is filled with lots of different animals with the greatest pictures!

For a history magazine, we get Colonial Williamsburg's monthly publication. We were married there, and we make a modest donation to them every year for our anniversary gift. In turn, they send us the magazine and a Christmas ornament. And the donation goes towards their education programs. My husband and I both enjoy reading the magazine and my 3 and 5 year old girls look at the color photos. The magazine covers topics like architecture, colonial life, ongoing restorations and archeology, art, the founding fathers, women's issues, slavery, literature, drama, food, and the Revolutionary War. Gorgeous photography. Maybe it will spark an interest in going to visit there someday...

Are ZooBooks still being published?? My kids really enjoyed these. Also, check with your local librarian, or perhaps the nearest science museum -- they might have good ideas also.

Also, I just stumbled across a website called Let's Read Math, for K-6, various books. They look inviting, you might try them.
