Special Education - We are moving to Northern Kentucky/Cincinnati area and have a 11 year old with special needs. We are looking for a school with a great special education program. Would appreciate any help with schools and/or areas to live. Thanks!

I don't know specificially, but here are some good guidelines.

Find a district that is land locked, one that is not growing, one that has a stable student population. The very last staff to be hired in any district that is growing are the special education staff and therapy staff. Growing districts have the staff they do have spread so thinly that they cannot devote the kind of attention to each child that they need to. Stable populations mean that the staffing for the basic 15% more or less, of kids who will have special needs, are in place and stable. We are generaly last on every list, so find one that both has excellent ratings and zero growth, and no potential for growth.

You are much better off to buy less house in a district like this, than to buy a big house in a growing district. Sped hiring laggs years behind need.

Also check the KY and OH DOE web sites for due process hearings for the districts you consider. This kind of search can tell you volumes, even about districts that seem great at first glance.

If your child is on the Autism spectrum, the Ohio Department of Education has an Autism Scholarship Program that provides $20K annually for education expenses should you choose not to enroll your child in the public schools.
