Florida Keys: Islamorada to Key West. Would be perfect for five days, and there are really nice places. between them.
So, hubby and I are finally going to get away .... for 5 days in August .... and we don't know where we want to go so I'm looking for some suggestions.
We've kicked around Vegas (been there done that though) and Lake Tahoe (never been there) or somewhere with a beach in the Caribbean.
He likes stuff to do at night. Like shows or something. During the day sitting by the pool would be great. I would prefer a beach.
We have never gone anywhere without our kids (we're a blended family of mostly grown kids). So ... any thoughts?

North or South Carolina, Reno, New York City, Key west Florida. It depends on what you like to do, if you gamble, etc.
Except for Key west which is charming, I haven't been to the others but they are on my wish list for a getaway! I have been to Lake tahoe which is beautiful also. Have fun!
Charleston, SC! We have beaches and lots of entertainment throughout the year.
Miami! Best pace for an adult get-away. Period.
Key west, FL or NYC would be great options!
Funny--when I saw the question title before I saw your name and the text of the question I was thinking Chicago! That won't work. I second those who said San Diego or San Fran/northern CA. We are going to Quebec City and Montreal in August; I'm hoping it will be a little like going to Europe without the expense and long plane ride. That doesn't have a beach though. As someone else said, it is hurricane season then so you might want to keep that in mind. Branson, MO would have a variety of shows and and pools, although again no beach. Have fun wherever you end up!
Not sure the best spot from your location but I would not go to Lake Tahoe or as someone mentioned Reno. The casinos are nothing like Vegas. Reno is a pretty sad town for a vacation in my opinion.
Tahoe is gorgeous and a great place for your daytime wishes but the casinos are old and pretty depressing. If you did go try to plan it when there's a big concert or show in town.
Vegas might be your spot. Not sure of the last time you went but we go every few years and it feels like such a different experience every time. They are always changing and adding new places and you won't find a better place to lay by a pool AND have tons of night life. Have fun!
NYC for night life / the Jersey Shore for the beach?
San Diego - has everything you could want. We went there for our honeymoon (8 years ago) and have been back twice since then, and will be going again this August.
ETA: I was going to suggest Miami too, but August is hurricane season, so I wouldn't chance it myself.
Go to Vegas =) Stay at the Bellagio. You'll love it. Plus, during the summer it's so hot there, you could score some great deals. HAVE FUN!
If you two are still in love, the place does not matter. Get in the car and drive until you feel like stopping.
If Money is not a problem definitely NYC for the night life. For Fun and Sun definitely Florida. Ft. Lauderdale beach has the fun and sun in the daytime and nightlife at night.
If hubby and I were to get away, we'd go to Portland or San Francisco. I love the later.... But I like scenery.... And day adventures.
There are many cruises that are just 3-4 days. You could go to any coast and get out in the water and have some fun.
Here is where I go to look around and wish I was able to go.
Just click on cruises and look around.
I dream of going to Tahoe one day. What about Lake Havasu? Wherever you go, I'm sure you'll have a great time! I'm jealous!
You live in Chicago. I am I. nY. Our winter sucked big time this year as did yours. I would head for the Caribbean.
San Francisco / Sonoma / Napa area.
Southwest flies into Oakland, you can take the BART into SF, its cheap. We did this in Sept '09 and it was a blast. You can hotwire a hotel in SF, stay in a B&B in Sonoma, do the wine tours, eat in some nice restaurants, it was great.
Last August my husband and I went to Quebec City for six nights to celebrate our 10th anniversary. It was our first time away from our children for such a long trip. It was fantastic! Felt like we were in Europe but a close, easy trip. Took an overnight trip to Charlevoix to do whale watching (boat ride up) and train trip back down the coast of the river. Highly recommend it!
We did Tahoe for our anniversary in four days. A beautiful hike each morning, we saw baby bears... U know if there's baby's the mamas around so we booked back down hill. We had a nice quaint breakfast in a little shop we saw. We went on a booze cruise and made friends and had a blast. We did some marlin Monroe ghost tour which was will but so fun. Gosh so much had nice dinners and moonlight beach walks. We went to one cheesy casino but they have a great nightlife in south Lake Tahoe but we stayed in the quiet north Lake Tahoe. It's a short drive and lots to do there. We went in July. To it was romantic breath taking and well it was in my bucket list and we had a great time!
