Good Hygeine for Pre-k Son

Hi. My son is 5.5 years old, and he starts school in the fall. He is becoming more interested every day in learning to take showers by himself and do his hair. I think this is wonderful. In any case, he wants to use deoderant every day like mommy and daddy do. Can anyone reccomend a deoderant that would be safe for him to use at this point? I don't want to discourage this, however, he is very sensitive as far as his skin is concerned. Any suggestions would be great!

What can I do next?

That's really cute that he wants to be just like his mom and dad! Maybe try finding a deodorant that is unscented and for sensitive skin. They should be the least likely to irritate his skin. You could also find one that is just a deodorant and not a anti-perspirant.
Good Luck!

My daughter has had to wear deoderant since she was 1 years old. I found that "dove" to be a safe brand to use. She has not developed any rashes from using it.

Um, I am going to vote for your son not using deodorant. This is not the first time he will try to be like you or your husband, but he's a child, not a grown-up.

Tell him he's very lucky because he is a child and doesn't need deodorant. Just like he doesn't have to shave, and he's too young to drink beer.

Hello, Tom's of Maine makes an all natural deodorant that would be great for kids. They have it at any health food store, even some of the big chains carry it now. Save Mart in Lancaster would also have it, on Fruitville Pike. Not sure where you are.
How cute that he wants to "decorate" himself too!

Tom's of Maine works very well for my very smelly 8 year old. She has been using deodorant since she was almost 5.

I'm going to vote in favor of Avalon Organics. There are a variety of scents, it's pretty mild, and it's propelyne glycol and aluminum free. Not everything that's labelled "natural" is, so be sure to read labels when shopping.

As someone with sensitive skin, I think the best deodorant to let your son use would be Toms of Maine or any other natural brand. Anything else would contain alliuminum which is dangerous for all of us, so a 5 year old should'nt use it. Hope this helps.

There is a deodorant that looks like a stone. I forget what it is called, but I do beleive that Walmart carries it. It does not have alcohol or scents in it. Most deodorants do.
''Do Not Allow your child to use your deodorant, it WILL harm him"..It is also important that he perspire, so do not let him use an anti-persperant.

I agree with Rolinda, anything natural. Specifically you want to avoid any aluminum and proylene glycol. The salt stick is a great idea. To properly use it, you must wet it. Unless your son would see someone else doing this, he would have no idea if you never wet it and just "applied" it dry. Personally, this is what I use and have found it effective unless I am really sweating. If you want to read up on why to avoid some chemicals, www.mercola.com has a lot of info. Enjoy your hygenic (sp?) son. It gives me hope for mine:-)
