my hubby and i have been trying to conceive our second child for about 4months now. i'm getting a lil bummed and discouraged. so i am going to try an ovulation predictor kit this month. but i'm not sure when i would start testing. the one test i priced only came with 10 test strips. so how many days after i got my period would i start testing? we have been having sex starting on the 10th day after the first day of my period, and then having sex every other nite for a week or so. we haven't had any luck with doing this, am i counting wrong? when do you ovulate approximately? i should know this since i already have one child. i figured somebody here would be able to set me straight about this. thank you..

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First off i don't need to try the ovulation kit, i have had 2 positive pregnancy tests.. i must have a pretty weird cycle or something. about 3 days before my period was due, i took a pregnancy test, it came out negative. then 3days later we had sex on the day i was suppossed to get my period. when i still didn't get my period 5days after i expected it, i took a HPT and to my surprise it came out positive. i have only told a few people about this, it is hard for me not to tell people. maybe since i 'm telling all of you it will make it a lil easier for me to hold off on telling the good news..
thank you for all the responses

You've gotten some good advice-- we did the temps and the OPK, and those at least helped identify my fertility problem (I had my period 5-6 days after I ovulated, called a leutal phase defect). If you are over 30 and haven't had any luck after 6 months of trying, see a doctor. If you are under 30, they'll want you to wait a year before they start intervening.

Hi E.,

I'm with Becky and Tracy. I took my temps and used fertility friend to get pregnant two times. Happened on the 1st try for the 1st child and 3rd try for the 2nd child. I was getting frustrated after two months of trying for baby two (I know, I have no patience), so we instituted what we called "the 12 days of doing it". I also bought ovulation predictor kits in bulk online. They are very stripped own versions, looking like litmus tests, but they worked.

Hope this helps!
Hang in there and good luck!

You should look into NFP/FAM. It is much cheaper to do and you will learn alot about your body and how it works.

I know Chealsea gave you great advice, several years ago now, I did the charting my temperature in the morning before I was out of bed.It helped me to see when I would ovulate. Relax, 4 months is really not long at all, however, the charting took about 3 months for us, it is much cheaper than buying a kit!

I think the only thing i would add is to start on day 9 and do it everyday. I know i have heard reasons why you should do every other. I don't remember or believe them though. My sister, best friend and i all tried everyday and got pregnant with in the first or second month. I did put my feet up too...lol! Myth or not i thought what can it hurt :) I wish you luck!!

I joined a website called www.fertilityfriend.com and it helped me to track my cycle. It was around $30 for a year membership, but they gave a free 30 day trial and I actually got pregnant within that 30 days. I tracked my temperature and also used ovulation predictor tests. I got a huge number of them off the internet. I think it was www.early-pregnancy-test.com or something like that. I'm sure you can find it on google. That way I didn't spend a lot and I was able to test for a long time and not worry about running out. If you get them at the drugstore they're much more expensive. The other thing I liked about Fertility Friend was that they have lots of groups you can join and people are very willing to answer lots of questions about getting pregnant and they are also very supportive if things don't happen as quickly as you might like.

Good luck to you!!

Becky

E.,
I know I sometimes feel slight twingy cramps when I'm ovulating. Have you noticed that?
I'm sure the test kit will give you lots of instructions. Or ask your OB/GYN what they recommend....good luck. I, too, did the elevate the hips after sex. And you might try yelling out: Swim, Little Guys, SWIM!" Just kidding. Have fun. You haven't really been trying all that long.....

I would recommend getting the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" before buying kits. It tells you how to chart temperatures in order to see when you ovulate (and also to tell if you are indeed ovulating).

I used this method (also mentioned below about taking temp before getting out of bed in the morning), and got pregnant in 2 months for my first child, and then on the first try for two more pregnancies.

I highly recommend it to any woman trying to get pregnant or who just wants to understand more about her body.

If you are going to use the ovulation predicter kit, this website (assuming you know how long your cycle is) can tell you the best days you are fertile and you can use the testing strips around those days and it should help give you a good idea so that you don't waste many of the strips.

I also very, very, very much recommend "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. The book is amazing, teaching you everything you need to know about fertility. She does discuss ovulation predictor kits in addition to learning about your personal fertility indicators. I've conceived 2 children by charting. The first time it took 8 months, more so due to coming off the pill. The second time happened the first cycle of charting. Cervical fluid, temperature shifts, and cervical position are much more accurate indicators of ovulation. Charting takes out so much guess work. Best of luck to you!!!

first of all relax. after i had a miscarriage and was older than you it took five months before i conceived my son tommy who is now two years old. it will happen when it is the right time. i heard that you should have sex when you really have the urge. normally, we times more during the month when we like to have sex than others. normally if you split the menstral cycle you have in by have you could get pregnant normally five days before. stop worrying. you will be fine. have fun do not make it a chore.

I highly recommend the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" by Toni Weschler. I learned more about my cycles from that book than anywhere else and I was 30 when I read it! Very good for explaining and identifying the signs for different stages of your cycle whether you want to conceive or avoid pregnancy. Best of luck!

Most people ovulate 10-14 days BEFORE they get their period.

I agree with getting the book "Taking Charge of Your Fertility." It is a must read for ALL women! It helped me and many of my friends.

The instructions that came in the box should help, as well.

Don't be discouraged: 4 months is not a long time at all. I think the average period is between 6 - 8 months for most women.

Most of all, try not to stress about it. (I know... ridiculous comment!) Best of luck.

I charted for over 5yrs after reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility (for $3 at used book store). I thought I'd be overwhelmed, but was a pro and know waaaaayyy too much about my body :)

For me, those ovulation kits didn't work (tried the stick and the fern). It was easiest and most accurate for me to go by my signs (cervical opening, cervical fluid, etc). I learned that most often, I ovulated on day 8 or 9 (very early compared to most women I know). Ironically, the 3x I got pregnant while charting, however, I ovulated after day 21!

For my friends who had no desire to chart or learn about their bodies, it was easiest for them to just have sex every other day, starting with the day their period ends, ending at 2wks.

Good luck!!!!!
