Going to Sleep at Night

I have twin 5 yr old boys and a 3 yr old boy who sleep in the same room. I put them to bed at 7 pm. If they have a nap, they won't sleep til 9 or 10 so I have been skipping the nap lately. This helps. But sometimes, they are tired at night but will keep getting up, talk to each other, play, etc. Any advice on how to get them to lay still, stay in bed, be quiet without spanking them?

Thanks a bunch!

So What Happened?

I've been skipping the nap and that has been helping. The only time they have a nap is when I know they are going to be up late that night, or were up late the night before and are extra tired. They are getting better. I am now trying using the 5 Love Languages by Gary Chapman, because if I use their love language as punishment they don't feel loved. So I am now trying to think of consequences for getting out of bed or being noisy that is different from their love language. It seems so be helping.

Thanks for all your advice!

Honestly, I put my two to bed either separately or early enough that they can jabber at each other for a while. My older one will not wake up once he's asleep, so I usually put him to bed first so he is asleep when I put his little brother in with him. Your 5 year olds might be okay without a nap, but your 3 year old might still need one, so you could try just giving him a nap for a while and then putting the twins to bed first. Otherwise, ignore them in there as long as they are not hurting anything, or just make it clear that they can read books quietly in bed but not run around playing. Keep calm when you go in to break anything up and remind them to stay in their beds. We also don't keep toys in their room, just books, so other than my older one throwing books on his brother's head (little one is still in a crib), there's not too much they can do.

My kids stopped napping at 2 yrs old., although I realize all kids are not the same. I would put them to bed and allow them 1/2 hour of quiet time - reading or quietly talking (in bed)and then time to go to bed. Give them a 5 min. warning before the 1/2 hour is over. If they don't follow the rules then they should lose a privledge. Make it clear ahead of time and follow through (spanking not needed). Good luck!

I tell my kids that if they promise not to get up, they get stories before bed. Then if they do not keep their promise, no stories the next night. No getting up is our main rule. I don't care so much if they talk for a while as they will eventually get bored and fall asleep, but they are not allowed out of bed no matter what.
