Hi Everyone,

I have a son that is Gluten free & oat free (there is a protein in Oats that work simular to the gluten, and I now know it effects him). So with that, my mom happened to notice the sunblock that we usually get has oats in it.. so. My question is, what sunblock do you use if you are gluten and oat free?

Thanks,

M.

So What Happened?

Yes, he is senstive to it skin, ingested etc.

He was tested, and GF oat effect him. You are right, oat do not have gluetn, however they have a protien like gluten and my son is effected by it. He is not Cieliac that I know of, it is a sensitivity. I have a freind who has it as well, and it is worse when you have a sensitiviy than cieliac. Touching playdogh, and stuff with glutens makes her ill. I am trying to work with my son to figure out if it is bothering him or not.

I don't have an answer, but I really want to thank you for pointing out one of the dilemmas of parenting a child with food allergies and food intolerances. In truth, it is never just abut what we put in their tummies.
We learned a couple weeks ago that there's wheat in my daughter's favorite shampoo. Most shampoos for curly hair seem to contain wheat protein. I never thought to look.
Good luck in your search for an oat-free sunblock!

Ava Anderson Non-Toxic sunscreen. Most sunscreens have toxic ingredients, even the ones targeted for kids. This one is completely non-toxic and works great! And no gluten or oats.

Unless your child is eating his sunblock, this shouldn't be a problem. I have a child who actually HAS Celiac disease and cannot have gluten - that's found in wheat, barley, and rye. Oats do NOT have gluten, just are often contaminated because they are grown in proximity to wheat, etc.

I use many oat containing products on my child's skin since they do help with her extreme dermatitis. They don't bother her.

If he truly has some sort of contact dermatitis related to oats, all Coppertone products are gluten free and all Banana Boat sunscreens are gluten free.

I don't know a lot about gluten issues, but if you're rubbing it on his back and he's not eating it, is it really going to be a problem?
