Dear moms,

Did anyone tried it? Can anyone help ? Its not yet FDA approved as far as I see, but did anyone used as an alternative with good results????Thanks to all.

Hi T.,
I can doubly understand your friend's pain. My daughter was diagnosed with diabetes at age 19 months and my 6 year old was just diagnosed 2 weeks ago today.
Your friend needs to talk to a pediatric endocrinologist. The endo. doctor that works with my kids is very cutting edge and she recommends ONLY doing blood glucose from the fingers and toes. Anything else is NOT accurate and not safe for such a young child where it's difficult to get an accurate reading for low blood sugars.

We use the AccuCheck SoftClix lancing device. My daughter is almost 3 and she does well with this lancing device. My son says that it hardly ever hurts.

I am so sorry that your friend and her child have to go through this. It's horrible and on top of that you have to give shots! BUT the thing that everyone has to realize is that even though it's hard, it HAS to be done.

I may be misunderstanding you when you say "...this child is in such a strugle everyday with this, that she cant see it anymore..." Do you mean that the mom can't see the struggle that the child has?

I am assuming that your friend has a pediatric endocrinologist for her daughter? These are all wonderful questions for her to ask at her next appointment.

Hi T.,

Are you refering to the pump??? My son (3yrs old) was diagnosed with diabetes type 1 on Oct. 20th of 2009. If someone can relate to your friend and what she is going through, its me. Checking glucose is certainly not fun, but for us, we call them mosquito bites and we try to make them fun. We use a sticker chart and my husband and I also poke our fingers to help him through this. Its worked great for us. Now, I'm not sure about your friends case, but my son will not be eligible for the pump (heard great stories about it) until June 2010. You can also advise your friend to visit..Diabetes Institute.com for more info. They will be able to help her. Good luck!

i don't have any personal experience with the infrared testing, but i belong to a hyperinsulism group that a few members have used it and said that it wasn't as reliable as the routine blood test. my daughter was born with HI and there have been times that i had to test her up to 18 times a day. it was very difficult. but there are little tricks to make it easier. i used a hot water bottle for awhile, and then ended up buying one of those microwavable heating pads. i just heated it up and would place it on the heel of her foot for a few minutes to warm it up. then i would stick her heel and i didn't have to squeeze at all because it flowed so much quicker warmed up. if you friend needs any more suggestions, have her email me anytime. ____@____.com. :) and from what i understand, the infrared testing is more reliable for high blood sugar numbers rather than low. wish you well!
