So here I go again with a name for my friend to ask you guys opinion's on. (LOL I have told her she needs to join this site & ask herself but she hasn't so I'm her in between I guess you could say :)) She is wanting me to ask your opinion on Maleah for a girls name and a suggestion on a middle name to go w/it.

Thanks again for all of the responses we have received already from the other 2 posts I have made about the same subject. I'm just thankful I'm not in her place stressing over the perfect name. She is due to have the princess Monday & is getting more stressed daily on the name. But thanks to you guys who have made some suggestions she now is going in w/a list.

What can I do next?

I strongly suggest she change the spelling. Maleah could be pronounced 2 different ways, depending upon the "leah" part. Will it be Ma-lee, or Ma-lee-ah? If the Ma-lee-ah, I suggest Malia. (Thinking President Obama's daughter).

For the middle name, my first thought was Grace, and then Ann.

My two cents is that Malia -- the Hawaiian version of Mary -- is beautiful, but Maleah is a bit of a mishmash -- it's the beginning of Mary, plus Leah, but it doesn't have any real history as a name. So, I'd encourage Malia, which will save your friend's daughter from a lifetime of spelling hassles.

That's just me, though: I'm a fan of names with history and meaning, and I'm a stickler for correct spelling.

For middle names, what about:

Malia Rose
Malia Grace
Malia Hope
Malia Lily
Malia Tess
Malia Lani*

My college roommate was (still is) named Lani, and her sister's name is Malia. Lani is Hawaiian for heaven.

Or, for something a little more offbeat:

Malia Wren
Malia Psalm
Malia Honor

ETA: To honor the little girl's birthdate, she might also go with:

Malia Solstice (my personal favorite)
Malia June
Malia Summer

LOVE the name! I'm a name snob, and I LOVE this name.

I like that it's different, but not so far off the beaten path. It's obvious that it's feminine, and it's phonetic. I do like the look of it being spelled Malia, better. However, that is how the President's daughter's name is spelled.....if that affects your thinking one way or the other.

I also like what someone else suggested, Malia Wren. My two year old is named Wren. :) So I'm a little biased there.

How many syllables is the mom's last name? What letter does it start with?

It sound pretty, but will be mispelled a lot since that is not a common spelling.

I like Ann for a middle name...

Can't wait to see the other repsonses!

A lot of it depends on the last name. And, with a first name that's a bit complex, they may want to go with a simpler name in the middle.

I agree that once your friend and her husband see the princess, the correct name will be obvious to them. They may want to test it with some hypothetical situations: "Maleah Lynn, do I have to come up there?" "Maleah (or Malia) Ann, may I present the Queen of England." "'Maleah Grace, Ph. D...."

I'm not sure if that's pronounced Molly (Mali? rhymes with Bali) or Ma-LEE-ah.
The pronunciation makes a difference when fitting it with a middle (and last) name to get a good flow.
Molly Ann (Anna?) or Molly Sue (Susan?) or Molly Beth are all nice.
Ma-lee-ah Vivian or Ma-lee-ah Emily or Ma-lee-ah Elizabeth are good too.

I hate uncommon spellings for common names. If that's the name she likes, she should spell it Malia. People will recognize that name and know how to pronounce it. Most people will spell it correctly if they hear it spoken.

Maleah just looks weird and people will wonder if it's Ma-LEE-ah or Ma-LAY-ah.

Another option would be to go with Leah.

I actually really like the name Malia and even thought about it as a middle name for my daughter.

I just don't get giving your child a name that they have to go through life explaining.

That spelling will result in a lifetime of her telling people how to say it and spell it. But if that's what mom likes, and she's okay with it, then go with it. Personally, like most of the other posters, I like Malia. Ann and Grace are the most popular middle names right now, so if she's looking for something unique, she might want to avoid those. No suggestions here though since I was in labor before we decided on a name. (And even then, we changed it later that day.)

I like it! But she will know when it's the right name when she meets her.

Middle name favs: Maleah Sue. Maleah Joyce. Definitely a one syllable middle name :-)

I like the traditional spelling of malia better. It seems she likes Leah but not on it's own? I like malia with Quinn, Elizabeth, Lane, Rae, Jane, lindsey, Madeline, grace. But yes, it mostly matters how the first name sounds with their last name.
