My Hubby being deployed for Iraq in about a month. We are having a going away party for him in about 2 weeks and I need some good gift ideas. I was already planning on putting together a small photo album of me and our girls for him to take so he can see us whenever he wants :) But what are some other good ideas?

What can I do next?

a lap top, body wash, deodrant, calling cards, or cell phone. a personal item of yours. like a necklace or ring. something he can carry to make him feel close to you. your joint favorite movie. a container so if you make him cookies or such he has a place to keep them. sun screen. the bandanas to keep your neck cool. stuff for jock itch and athletes foot meds.his favorite cds. a necklace with pic of you and the kids. these are all ideas from a guy who used to be military.

A photo album is great, but how about something where they can talk and send him a message? I know they have photo frames that can record a short message. Or, if you have the ability (or a friend) who can video tape them doing somethings that make him smile - singing a favorite song, dancing, reading a special book, - you can send him with a CD or DVD with lots of reminders of your family and home.

Some "nice" pictures of yourself! If they have internet access, which my ex did a netbook might be great so he can keep in touch by email and rec. pictures etc. I think the other great thing you can do is get a care package ready and send it, since it takes about 3-6 weeks to actually reach their hands. I always put in extras for the other guys & gals. They appreciate baby wipes and sample sized things too. Good luck to you, its tough!

I just researched this and the advice I got from other military moms was to not have a really big good-bye party close to when he leaves, unless it is your husband's idea and really wants it. Just do a casual dinner as a family, or a military family only party, and do the extended friends and family parties two weeks or so before he leaves, because those are the most depressing and emotionally draining parties. Your husband needs to get into the zone before he goes, so make sure he wants a big bash right before he goes of people crying, saying goodbye, and saying really stupid things that will freak you and him out. I asked my husband and he didn't want a party at all or to even see his family. We did our fun stuff months before deployment.
