My 10 year old son is one of the lead roles in the school musical. He is one of the youngest to be cast for this kind of role. He has worked very hard all year and I want to get him a gift for opening night. I know that alot of the girls get roses, but I am at a loss for a boy. Balloons maybe? Thought you guys might have some unique ideas. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

My son was (and still is) very involved w/ theatre.
Some families did flowers, even for boys.
We do little things that he enjoys... a book, a t shirt, candy, etc.
A gift bag could hold anything, and a balloon tied to it is another great idea!
We also save tickets and programs to add to a memory book.
And don't forget your camera... pics of him w/ family and friends could be printed and framed as a gift (for closing night!) or for the memory book!
Have fun!

Hi, J.! If you have a variety of photos, I would do a small scrapbook. It's something that he will have forever and treasure as he gets older!

Hi J., I have an 8 year old daughter and will be celebrating my 11th anniversary in May to my high school sweetheart. I also love celebrating my daughter's accomplishments.

I love the idea of ballons. Maybe you can attach to an oversized stuffed animal. You could also make a special treat at home (edibible arrangement....you can make these yourself, cake, favorite meal).

My daughter loves all of these!

Good Luck and Congratulations to your son on his success.

My brother is a musician and a framed picture of his first CD was really meaningful for him. How about a framed copy of the program with a picture of him (that would be hard to give on opening night unless you got a picture at a dress rehearsal).

What is the show about? I think it might be more meaningful, and last longer, if you get him something related to the show. Playing the frog price? Get him a little frog... that sort of thing. I'm not sure what play he is in, but I'm sure that you can find something appropriate to his character.

I would be more inclined to get him something he could keep for many years, such as a book, plaque (inspirational saying, etc) or even an eagle figurine w/ maybe a saying or something.

Eagles symbolize SO many things.....freedom, strength, courage, etc. Make it what you want. Might be something else he likes but make is something special. I'd forego the flowers, balloons, etc. They are so temporary. ESPECIALLY if he has worked so hard and it's a turning point for him.

Maybe present him w/ a plaque with his picture in his costume (if he has one), his role and the name of the play and the date? I know...boys are tough when it comes to things like this!

It is customary for actors both male and female to receive flowers on opening night. I know this from seeing the high school plays my children have been in, and from the community theatre my husband did. If you are afraid he wouldn't take to that since he is so young, then balloon bouquet would be a good substitute. Also, in community theatre, it is custtomary to give a token to the cast of something relevant to the play. Doesn't usually happen in school productions, but that might be fun for him and the cast. Usually something little like a vial of sand for the Little Mermaid.

You should try to get him something to go along with the whole musical idea. Maybe a little gift basket type thing with candies shaped as music notes along with a copy of his favorite musical.

Hi J.....sounds like you've got lots of great ideas. I was thinking a little bag of goodies or something that he really likes/enjoys or an edible arrangement of some sort. I really like the ideas about something relating to his character or the play itself. That or something engraved would be really sentimental to him if you think he will continue in this path. He will also have that to look back on. Maybe you could even buy him his own little "Oscar" for an outstanding performance. Or maybe Google something that is more relative to theatre or a performaning arts award. Good luck and congrats to your son! :-)
