My son who is seven is going to a birthday party for a 6 year old neighbor girl. What are some gift ideas and who are the characters that are big with this age? Like my son is in to spiderman, batman....but I have no idea what girls are into. Is that too old for princess stuff. She likes nail polish so maybe I could get a cute selection? Price range is 10-15.

This little girl is a girly girl, dressing up in princess costumes and running around the cul de sac in them.
We're giving her an outdoor toy-- this handheld cone launches spinning disks in the air. Every kid visiting our house loves it so my son wants to give her that. Thanks for the ideas!
Not too old for princess probably especially from Frozen. What was a big hit for us was a pot holder loom. My girls loved them starting around 6. I know as a mom I like craft gifts best...

Craft projects (maybe rubber band looms; those are popular now), kid appropriate nail polish and bubble bath are usually good. My Little Pony is popular with girls clear up into their teens (who knew?)
A make up gift from a 7 yr old BOY to a 6 yr old GIRL?
Giving make up/jewelry is too personal for anyone other than her immediate family (her Mom or older sisters).
If it's coming from your son, stick with age appropriate not too personal gifts.
Get her a set of Dominoes, a small jigsaw puzzle (Disney princess theme ok), or a Scrabble game (the letters are great for some homework/spelling projects).
A stuffed animal might be alright if you know what she likes.
If she likes building things a small set of Legos is a perfectly fine gift for a girl.

No make- up, I get so annoyed when my girls receive nail polish as I knew it will end up ruining something. Crafts, cute pens and pencils and a diary, Lego friends, I have given pajamas many times, a gift card to the local ice cream place. Crafts are my girls favorite though!
Friends Legos, a board game, art kit, craft project, bracelet making kit, moon sand set (they make really cool ones where you have a bake shop or whatever). My daughter is 4 and according to her My Little Pony and Princesses are for babies. So, unless you know she likes those things I would pick something else.
I say no to anything that would permantly damage clothes and carpet-and nail polish would be a big no no. Why not clear lip glosses and some little small girl type bath and body stuff (I think they make a specific line for young girls. I would find her a cute bag or purse to put all her stuff in. Inexpensive necklaces?
Mini dream light. I purchased regular sized one on Amazon (usually between $17-$22 for the larger one). This was my go-to gift for all kids turning 5-7 about a year or two ago and my kids both have them and use them each night!! I would shy away from girly stuff, princess stuff, etc unless you know she likes it! I agree that coloring books/markers/stickers/etc are always good ideas, too! Add bubbles and chalk and that would be a great gift in my daughter's eyes (she's almost 7). Also - moon sand. That stuff is awesome!
Ask the mom for suggestions - she will appreciate that. When in doubt, give books and/or art supplies (not craft kits - I mean paper, pencils, crayons, even washable markers if you must).
Just ask the mom. She will appreciate your taking a moment to ask her what her daughter's interests are. It's thoughtful and it's also the safest bet for getting something the girl actually will like and use. For all you know, her mom might loathe nail polish coming into the house, or the girl might dislike puzzles, or she might have zero interest in any popular characters. It does happen!
If the family knows your son well enough to say yes to their daughter inviting him, it's fine for you to call the mom to ask about a gift, even if you and the mom are not friends.
i'd stay away from 'girl' gifts. so many kids aren't into gender-specific toys, and if you don't know her well, why go there? i'd go with a classic book or game, or something like a hula hoop or kite or frisbee or legos.

Monster High and LaLa Loopsy seem to still be popular. But you can also make life simple .... go to Michaels and pick up some kind of a craft kit.
A mini canvas, few bottles of craft paint & paintbrush. All cheap at your
local Walmart type of store (not an art store).
Dress up stuff (feather boas, mini heels, crown, wand etc).
Bag of big Leggo pieces. $15. They have them in pink, purple colors.

Set of little girl nailpolish, plastic pencil box to keep them in, nail stickers.
My Little Pony is very "in" right now. Otherwise, crafts are great.
Umm.... is she INTO princess stuff? Not all girls are... no matter what their age. I'd check that out before jumping with a princess idea..whether it is legos or dolls or nail polish or whatever...
My daughter turns an official teenager next month, and she has never been much into princess stuff. Or My Little Pony. Or Barbie. Or Fairies. None of it. She is a tomboy and loves animals and super heros. Seriously. She's incredibly interested in Raven of late. I'd never even heard of Raven--but she did a whole science project for her 7th grade science class that was a classification chart, and she chose as her subject matter: superheroes. She knows all about them.
Took them to see the latest Xmen on Sunday, and my husband was asking her to verify who certain obscure characters were. Crazy!
So just be sure before you make any assumptions.
Crafts are always good, though. Really. Soda bottle and mentos makes my daughter's day! LOL
I know a diverse group of girls; some love 'girly' stuff (incl. media characters/movies) while others adamantly *hate* it. That said, a lot of girls that age I know like to draw and love cute stickers. If it were me, I'd get a new set of markers or cool colored pencils and a few packs of stickers. Or metallic pens and black paper. Art supplies are usually appreciated, btw.
My vote is for outdoor play stuff, too (bubbles, chalk, kite, etc). My daughter is 5.5 and loves princesses, My little pony, nailpolish AND superheroes, cars, and bug catching utensils! Our neighbor made a "funny" comment about having our kids play together (with another neighbor girl) and said "I don't know if D (his son) would play with the girls, because he's not into tea parties and barbies." Over the course of this conversation, my daughter is running around the yard collecting grasshoppers and roly-polys! I just laughed and said "I don't know about those things either, but I don't see D out here catching bugs!" haha (*roll my eyes*)
So, either ask the parents or buy something more gender-neutral (could also include stickers, art paper, etc). :)
I would go to Claire's at the mall. They have terrific gifts for young girls.
I think most girls are starting to outgrow the princess stuff by that age. My daughter is 6 going on 7 and she "was done with that princess stuff" (her words not mine) about a year ago. Most of her friends seem to be done with it too. I would stay away from the character stuff myself. Girls that age seem to be getting into the Monster High type of stuff and a lot of parents don't find it acceptable. (But that is a whole other post.)
I would go with craft things, maybe nail polish, or books. My daughter would prefer books, crafts or science experiments.
