My brother-in-law is coming home this Friday from 6 months in Afghanistan and I want to send some sort of welcome home gift. They live in Ohio and my sister isn't having any sort of big welcome home party, but I want to send something. Any ideas? He's not a big sweet eater and it doesn't have to be food- it's just the first thing that comes to mind :) Thanks!

What can I do next?

How about a gift card for them to go out to eat or do something fun like bowling or a movie?

Send something for both of them to enjoy together.

Remember... They haven't been together for 6mos. ☺
If they have any kids.... Find someone that lives near them that they'd trust to watch em!!! Pay for it and let them have their time together.

Then [again, if they have kids] send them something for them to do with the kids too. A game for all of them. Family time is what he's going to want/need. And your sister is going to want some hubby time too!!!

My husband is currently in Afghanistan, so first off, thank you to your BIL and his family for their service!!
How about a "comforts of home" care package? Here's some ideas to include...robe, slippers, handheld back massager, hot cocoa/tea/coffee, magazine subscription, gift card to restaurant/store, video game/board game, movie tickets, amusement park tickets, new DVD/CD/book he's been wanting, photo book of family pics from the last 6 mo.
Basically, think of the things you would miss most if you were camping in a tent in the desert for 6 mo. =)

Does he like to read?

If so, they have a "Chicken Soup For the Veteran's Soul" book that he might like.

And you could always send it with some boullion cubes, spices, soup mugs and a recipe for chicken soup!

Tell your bro we all say "Thanks!"

Fresh fruit is hard to get in a combat zone so you might consider an Edible Arrangement. We've had great luck with them.

Just sending a card or e-mail would be nice, too. My husband was a bit overwhelmed when he returned from Iraq and was happy to have a quiet homecoming.

Well mattering on what sort of guy he is, a bullet pen would be memorable. (a well deressed bullet... Google it)

My husband is in the military also and he always enjoys receiving items like DVDs of movies or television shows that he has missed. He also likes to come back and do family outings so a gift card to a theme park or winery works too. Something that can help him to reconnect with his family. They have missed him and he has definitely missed his family.
