I need to get a gift for a 10yr old girl. It has been so long since I was that age and things change. What are girls this age into? Do they still play with dolls or are they outgrowing those?

Please help! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I think it depends on the child. My 10 year old still likes toys, but I know there's a lot of 10 year olds that have grown up too soon that would think toys were babyish. However I wouldn't necessarily go for anything too grown up either. Maybe a game would be a good choice. You can go to amazon.com and search for games. Then narrow the search based on her age and again based on the number of stars given. This will give you some highly rated, popular games for kids her age. Another idea is a craft/art kit. In fact if you like the idea of a doll for a gift, they have kits where the child can sew and make their own doll/stuffed animals. The process of making it is fun and then if she wants to keep it to play with she can, but if not she can give it to a younger friend as a gift which would also be nice for her. A nice book is another great idea. Since you don't know which books she owns, perhaps a nice gift card to a bookstore or amazon would be nice. Another idea is to call her mother and find out what she is interested in. :)

Crafts or crafts with book kits are very popular with this age group. Fun socks, scarves, hats, gloves, and tote bags.

Craft kits are cool. But find out a little about the particular girl you are gifting before making any purchase. Not all girls are "into" nail polish and costume jewelry. Mine isn't. She's 11 and is not a girly girl and even though (for a very brief time right after she stopped chewing her nails) she did wear nail polish for a few months around age 8, she doesn't like wearing it now. Nor jewelry. Nor anything pink or purple really.
She likes crafts though (from making potholders, to sewing sock puppets, to making volcanoes and shooting mentos and soda off in the yard).

She also likes iTunes cards for her ipod, and BOOKS. Good grief, a gift card to a book store would make her day right now!
Dolls? NEVER. She has never cared for Barbies or any other kind of doll. Stuffed animals? yes. Pillow pets? yes. But dolls? Definitely not.

A manicure/pedicure set complete with nail clippers, cuticle pushers, nail files ect then a a nice polish remover, cuticle remover, nail polish and hand lotion.

I found that the tubs of nail polish remover made by "Pretty Nails" works better than "Cutex".

Every kid is going to be different of course, but I would say most 10 yr old girls are not into dolls or barbies or even crafts anymore. I would do a gift card for itunes or to an accessory store like Claire's, a subscription to one of those magazines with popular singers or groups in it, Barnes and Noble gift card, anything with her name on it.

I think board games are still very fun for girls this age, since it's something they can play with their friends when they come over. I have always loved board games - as a child and still today - and would always be happy to receive one as a gift.

We have great games available through Discovery Toys. Visit my page at http://www.discoverytoyslink.com/karenchao and contact me with questions or for recommendations. Two of my favorites for this age group are Wiz Kidz and Mosaic Mysteries.

The 10 y/o girl I buy for is still into Barbies, but I honestly don't know if that's the norm.

She also likes craft kits. You can find fun ones at places like Michael's. Things like jewelry making, decorating a shirt/tote bag, friendship bracelets, etc. would be good choices.

I also think that nail polishes and lip gloss are still very safe bets for this age as well.

A gift certificate for Fashionplaytes is my go-to for that age. They get to design their own clothes and the company makes them.

My daughter will be 10 soon... what she really loves is (because I can't afford to take her to the salon for a hair cut often, so I do it myself), is she LOVES to go to a hair salon, to get her hair cut. Its a real treat for her.
Her Aunty got her a gift cert. once for a salon at our local mall, and she really loved that. She felt so special and got a cute hair cut.

Or, a manicure/pedicure gift cert. For girls, they only put polish with a design on it, not the actual scraping of the skin etc. For kids, it typically costs less. At least in my city it does.

People are right, toys can be sort of iffy at this age. I have an 11 year old girl and a 9 year old girl. The 11 year old seemed to outgrow toys right around age 10. She still LOVES her American Girls, but she doesn't really play with them. She just likes to make little set ups for them (a school locker, a bedroom, etc.) Well, I guess that's playing, but you know what I mean. My 9 year old still loves LOTS of toys. Calico Critters are her favorite things on earth. And legos.

I would not get a doll - lots of girls don't care for them (and never did). My 11 year old spent about an hour online this morning googling stores like "Justice" and "Claires" - mostly for jewelry and accessories. A gift card at one of those places might be good. She is also REALLY wanting a fun chair for her room - like a reading chair. I saw a really cute one at Walmart this week. It's only $16.95, so it wouldn't break the bank. I don't know what it's called, but I'm thinking maybe "butterfly chair"? or something like that. I'm going to take my daughter to look at it tomorrow - she has some birthday money to spend.

That's all I can think of now. Good luck!

10 year olds aren't into toys these days. They outgrow those young. Craft kits, costume jewelry, gift card to Claire's, kits of nailpolish or bath/body products are popular among the tween set.
