Getting Through the First Trimester

I just recently found out I was pregnant, I feel tired and nauseous all the time like I have a mild case of the flu. Mornings are the worst, I never throw up but its just hard for me to peel myself off the couch (after I have peeled myself out of bed) and get going. I feel terrible because I have two toddlers to care for, along with all the other things that go with caring for a family. I need some advice on how you got through this time. I feel incredible guilty turning the t.v. on for my kids just so I can lay on the couch and counting down the time until nap/bedtime. I usually make a big effort to keep the kids busy (playing outside, crafts, walks, going places, etc) I have tried eating a cereal bar before I get out of bed in the morning, peppermints, ginger ale, eating small meals. I need to feel better so I can care for my two and we can be active again.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, hubby does help a lot but he has to work so most of the time its just me and kids. I have taken half a unisom and b6 the last two nights and feel tons better.I am tired all the time but I can deal with that, it was the churning tummy that I couldn't deal with.

I didn't hear anything about vitamins? You really need them to keep going. The first trimester is the toughest. You must have had the same symptoms for the other 2 pregnancies? You just have to take one day at a time. Good luck.

How old are your kids?

Next, I had MEGA horrible morning sickness and migraines with both my pregnancies. The only that that helped me, and per my Doctor's advice, was Acupuncture. It does not hurt and is very relaxing. Just one session, and all morning sickness/migraines went away.

When I was pregger's with my 2nd child... my daughter was 3... then turning 4 when I gave birth.
But during pregnancy and all that fatigue, I simply explained to my daughter, about Mommy's tummy and taking care of it and that I will get tired and need to rest. She understood. And we would take naps together.
For me, per my daughter, simply verbalizing to her and talking with her about it... really helped. She understood. She would also not demand that I carry her. I explained I cannot. Or if I had a hard time getting up stairs etc., she would even help nudge me by patting my on my rear.
I simply explained to her, about things. I simple ways she could understand per her age. That helped a ton.

all the best,
Susan

I know how you feel! I have two kids and I'm just about 7 weeks pregnant and i'm so sick! You can take a B6 vitamin and 1/2 a unisom. It helps to take always some of the sickness but until your body gets used to it you will be sleepy. I took one last night and then again this morning and although I wasn't as sick I took a nap at about 10 am while my kids watched t.v. So other than that I don't now.......just pray. haha

Talk to your doctor about how you're feeling. Are you on prenatals already? Prenatals are harsh on some women's stomachs and your doctor may be just fine with you taking two flinstones vitamins and 25-50mg of Vitamin b-6 every day. B-6 is supposed to help with nausea. Some doctors will recommend Unisom as well, but talk to them before switching anything up. It won't take it all away, but it might help you be able to manage it. Some women find relief from flat coca cola, sprite, 7 up or sierra mist. I've heard recommendations for preggy pops (its just a candy but i think its ginger), lemon heads, lemon drops, ginger lozenges, ginger altoids and lays potato chips. Sometimes for me, a tums will head off a bout of nausea because it would help coat my stomach. Do watch how many tums you take though and if you take other meds make sure the antacids won't interfere.

I'm also in my first trimester right now, though I'm creeping up on the second trimester.. and this pregnancy has been rough on me as well. Like you I spent the first several weeks glued to the couch. I was vomiting though so that just put the cherry on top of everything. I notice that what would help one day may not help the next day, so just keep trying things and hopefully you'll develop a little collection of remedies. My son was 15 months at the time I got pregnant and did surprisingly well during the whole "mommy is really sick" time. I was very proud of him for how well he played even though I couldn't be as involved. Just explain as simply as you can "mommy feels sick, she needs to rest."

Hope you feel better soon!

Don't feel guilty!! Just take care of yourself and turn on Caillou!!:D There are lots of educational programs out there and a short season of TV isn't going to harm them. You can still rest while they color, have them come and read to you and if you feel like it take them to McDonald's for a cone in the afternoon and then just let them run and play. It is really cheap, they love it and you can sit in A/C while they can get the wiggles out. When my son was two and I was pregnant this saved the day!! Before you know it you will be feeling better and the fact you can't play as much with your kids is not something they will remember. I have no idea how much my mom played with me but I know she loved me and that is all that matters in the end. Good luck, no guilt, and congrats!!

i have seen some candy that is for preggers women to not have morning sickness. if i ate a little something that usually took care of the nausia. i dont have much help for that topic but you mentioned guilt about the tv. dont feel guilty your not harming your kids by keeping them safe. let them watch educational along with entertaining tv. how much tv. did you watch as a kid and your ok. really you have a great reason to lay around and take care of yourself. your body is building another body and its draining. so relax keep the kids entertained and know that survival mode for the next yr or so isnt going to harm them. getting them unstuck from the tv wont be a huge deal either once your ready. congrats on the new baby.

Well first off the phase will pass. I relied heavily on saltines and real ginger ale, no not the canada dry stuff. I also increased my protein intake. I have heard that is one of the things that the body craves. Oh and white potatoes. Before I got pregnant 2 years ago I did not eat a lot of them. but some reason I would fiend for them my entire pregnancy

Eating a lot of protein seems to help. Beans are high in protein, easy to make, and easy to make into something appetizing. You can cook a large pot of beans and eat them as a side with a meal, make bean dip, make bean and cheese nachos, make a soup...lots of different ways to have beans.
Peanut butter is high in protein, as are all nuts. Maybe keeping a jar of nuts beside the bed and having a handful in the morning will help get your day started off better.

Protein also helps provide energy so eating more protein should help with the morning sickness and give you more energy.

Another suggestion for nausea is to eat small amounts often and include plenty of protein. One site that I found on the Internet was to have a protein snack last thing before going to bed. Lack of protein is one cause of nausea. Your body also needs more Vit B6. Prenatal vits, if you're not taking them are essential. Be sure to eat before taking most meds including vits.

Apples, ginger root and saltines. I also stayed away from dairy. I had HG with all 6 of my pregnancies (I lost a baby because of severe dehydration.) Rest a lot and don't feel guilty because you lay on the couch. You'll feel better soon enough and will be able to play with your kids again! Congratulations!! Hang in there!

This is exactly what I felt like when I was pregnant, but I didn't have any other little ones to chase around. It sounds like you are doing all you can do, but the one thing you did not mention in your original post is your spouse. Where is he in all of this? You need to let him step up to the plate and help you out. I had HG and the doctor prescribed Zofran which did help somewhat. HTH!

Oh trust me my dear, it will be like this for about 2-3 months. my doctor told me usually once you hit your 4th month it all stops. For me it did. Now I have a 5 month old son and I just found out I am pregnant again with my second one. I feel a little nauseous but not too bad. Just eat saltine crackers sip gingerale and rest. Don't feel bad about turning on the tv, just think once you feel better you can get out there with your kids again. Maybe your husband or bf which ever you have lol can help as well. If you are single mom don't worry it will get better. Have family take the kids for a while, while you rest. Good luck and I hope you feel better. :)

I don't know how you feel about taking nausea medication, but my doctor prescribed Ondansetron. I took one in the morning until the nausea went away. It was the only thing I could do to get lively for my toddler who had enough energy for the both of us. Hope you get to feeling better soon.
