Getting Out Stains from Daughter's Vitamin

Hi. The current Tri-Vi-Sol that my daughter is taking contains iron. She does not like the taste so whenever I try to give it to her she hits the dropper and also spits it out. Unfortunately it ends up staining not only her skin, but whatever she is wearing. The stain wipes off her skin with water, but I have not been able to get it out of her clothing. Does anyone have a suggestion of how to remove the stain which I think is due to the iron in the vitamin ?

What can I do next?

Use a black or dark colored bib when you give it to her. Or just let her sit naked in her diaper when you give it to her. There is really no good way to get it out. Oxyclean baby seemed to help some but only if you spray it right away and even then it still stays somewhat. Also try aiming the dropper toward the inside of her cheek so it doesn't hit her tongue and she tastes it less. Or mix it in with some formula.

I have found that if you rinse the clothing in cold water, and then put Dawn dish soap and rub the stain, it removes the Tri-Vi-Sol!! No hint of yellow or anything!!

I don't have great advice about getting stains out except washing immediately and throwin in some oxiclean.

BUT, my trick that worked well was giving my twins the vitamins in the bathtub, so when they spit out half of it, no clothes got dirty. It took them about a year before they liked it, it's really the iron that tastes bad. If you try to hide it in food or drink you'll need to give the one without iron I think.

I am not sure about the TriViSol, but Borax is my go-to stain remover, especially for stubborn poop stains that would not come out with Dreft alone. Borax is a powder so I usually rub it in real good onto the stain and then rinse with warm/hot water. If I'm not going doing laundry right away, I'll soak the clothes in warm water with a little extra Borax until I'm ready.

I also use PolyViSol, the vitamin without the iron, and it still stains...my daughter's iron supplement (Ferosol) is clear and doesn't stain. It's not the iron in the vitamin that causes the stain (go figure!). I use OxyClean stain remover spray as soon as you can before the stain sets in and it comes out in the wash...sometimes if you catch it early enough, it comes out almost immediately. If you wait until the stain sets, it will fade, but not come out completely. Also try giving the vitamin to her in her formula/water, or if you have to use the dropper, aim it toward the inside of her cheek and push in very slowly. Our pediatrician said both methods were OK.

Hi H.,
I live in Manhattan as well.
I belong to a wholesale shopping club that manufactures environmental safe products. However, these are not sold in retail stores. We have 2 items that would remove the stains.
We have as well vitamins that kids love and other nontoxic products that save you money.

Several people already mentioned the bathtub trick. (I never did find a way to get the stains out of the clothes.) My other suggestion would be to try a different brand of vitamin. I use My Kidz Iron, and my 10-month-old LOVES the stuff!!

According to a professional clothes cleaner, yellow stains usually don't come out of clothing.

Try using a wipe immediately on the clothes. I still wonder how those things are gentle enough for a baby's skin. They take out any stain on most materials. Also, my pediatrician recommended mixing the vitamin with either the milk or juice my son drinks if he didn't like it. That may help avoid the mess altogether. Good luck!

At the risk of stating the obvious, I try to do these type of things (medicine when occasionally they don't like it) naked and/or in the bathtub. It just removes the whole stain/spilling stress completely. Also, if your daughter likes the bathtub and is playing, she may be somewhat distracted.
