Maybe if you try mashing your own food, gradually making it lumpier and lumpier. also look into if the food is flavored or not, seasoning and the texture/natural taste may be unappealing to him.
I cannot get my 1 year old to eat "people" food. He eats the pureed version of just about anything, but he spits out every solid (except yogurt, Cheerios, melon & bananas) I try to give him., I'm frustrated; it's been going on for like 3 months! He can chew...he has 8 teeth. I know he should be done with pureed foods, but if I didn't give him any, he wouldn't eat anything. I've tried it for a few days--no purees--but he refuses;he'd rather starve! Help!

my son only ate the above like your child..and noodles... he started to eat reg. food at 17 mo. The dr. said when he is ready - he'll let you know.. so don't rush it!!! good luck.. plus baby food is very healthy.!!
I also used the services of Early Intervention..
They were wonderful. And my younger daughter does have a sensory integration disorder, but it unfortunately wasn't diagnosed until she was 12. But food texture and spicing were always an issue when she was young..
I have to agree with Donna. I have a friend who's son had the same problem. He will only eat pureed food. He is now almost 8 years old and still having problems. My friend is one of those people who will not admit there is something wrong with her kids. They went through speech/eating therapy, but they never followed throgh with the suggestions or the therapy. Because they didn't see an improvement after the first few sessions, they stopped the therapy. he is now almost 8 years old and he still has a lot of feeding problems. he has a younger sister and he even discourages her from eting things. there are not many food that he will eat and he will not eat any solids other that pasta.
If I were you I would contact your pediatrician and they should be able to get you incontact with your local Project Child Team. they will come out to you home an evaluate your son, free of charge. If there is a problem, you can act early and hopefully things can be corrected quickly and with no real setbacks. With early intervention this type of situation is 100% correctable. If the pediatrician hesitates to encourage you to do this, just go with what you think is best for your son. So many times children go with a late diagnosis because the pediatricians say they will grow out if it or that it is just a phase. As a parent you have to do what you thing is best for your family. if it is somethin that really concerns you, have him evaluated. Let them tell you if it is just a phase, or if it does require intervention. good luck and let me know what happens
Hi C.,
Only you know how extreme this really is, but if you are having serious concerns, I would really recommend you try having him evaluated by early intervention. They come right to your house and do an evaluation. My daughter was 12 months old and only eating one flavor of pureed baby food...that was it...she had an eval and had 6 months of speech therapy (for feeding issues, not speech) and by the end of it she was eating solids. She still does not eat well, but much better than prior to the therapy.
When you say he just won't eat unless it's pureed, that really sounds to me like it is sensory related, and that is why I think an evaluation might help. A child without sensory issues might give in and eat it, but if he doesn't do that, I'd definitely go with early intervention.
Good luck.
