My daughter decided to color her clothes last night. Just wondering how to get crayon out of cotton. I haven't laundered them yet as I wasn't sure if they needed to be pre-treated. Thanks Ladies.

Hi A.,

Luckily today's crayons are very washable. I would simply toss it in the wash with detergent and cold water. Do not use a pretreat such as Shout it has enzymes which are intended for organic stains not inorganic. If the crayon does not come out on the first wash, do NOT dry the clothes simply wash again. Good Luck.

Hey A.,

I have had this problem. My daughter left a pack of crayons in her pocket and I washed and dryed it. Needless to say just about every piece of clothing she owned was colored. I found a website, can't remember which, I used WD-40 to get the crayon out. Then used Dawn dish detergent to get the WD-40 out. Sounds like a pain but it really worked well for us. I couldn't afford to purchase all new clothes for her.

Hope this helps.

I believe crayons are oil based and I would use the product Lestoil to get it out. Soak the crayon on the clothing first in the lestoil then wash. If after you've washed and this didn't work you may need to call Crayola to ask.

Hi A., Shaklee's non-toxic laundry detergent will definitely get the crayon out of your daughter's clothes. I would treat the clothing with it as a pre-soak/pre-treat first - then throw them in the washing machine per usual. I would also add a scoop of Shaklee's non-toxic laundry booster called Nature Bright (it is Shaklee's answer to bleach, which is so toxic and bad for us). I absolutely guarantee that the crayon will disappear during the wash!! Yes, I am a Shaklee distributor, and I am simply answering your plea for an answer to your crayon problem. If you are interested in trying these products, I will be happy to send you a sample of each to try on these "crayoned-clothes". I live in Georgetown -- where are you? If you are nearby, I will drop off the samples so you use them today. Otherwise, I will have to put them in the mail. Please let me know if you are interested. Must be in the air. My daughter, also born Oct. 2007, just crayoned on her daddy's white button down shirt this weekend. He used Kiss Off stain remover (available only at art supply stores--it was created by an artist) and it came off instantly. Best of luck.

Many years ago, my son left a purple crayon in one of his school jacket pockets. My fault for not checking the pockets better, but it went through a full wash with the rest of his new school clothes. Didn't realize it until I was pulling his clothes out of the dryer with purple stains all over my dryer as well as his clothes. I was all set to throw everything out, when my mother, God Bless Her, said give them to me and I'll see what I can do. I got them all back about a week later looking like new. She said she scrubbed each piece with Lestoil by hand and then soaked them in the same solution, rescrubbed, then put them through two wash cycles to get the Lestoil smell out. It worked! Line dried them....She didn't use a dryer.
What do you have to lose? Hope it helps.

If they crayons are crayola washables, don't pre-treat them, it will just wash out.

Hi A.--
As a routine, with two little children, I basically launder their clothes the same way each time. As far as crayon goes, I have never pre-treated clothing with crayons on it. I run it through their general wash and it comes out:

Fabric softener
1/2c vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser with the softener
1c vinegar in the general wash load
Woolite
scoop of OxiClean powder

Agreed with your previous response--if it doesn't come out, I'd contact Crayola directly. In fact, there is no reason why you shouldn't contact them in the first place.

Good luck! A.
