Getting Away with My Daughter for the Weekend

I want to take my daughter (11 yrs old) out for the weekend during the winter. We have never done this before and I have no idea where to take her and what to do. I would like to stay within at least 3hrs from our home (hopkins). The closer would be better, but the drive together by ourselves would be nice also.

What can I do next?

THis is hard to answer without knowing how old she is. There is Wild Mountain in Taylors Falls, Trollhaugen in Dresser WI If you want to ski or go sledding. They are both in the St. Croix river valley, so they are gorgeous areas all year long. An indoor water park would also be a great place to go.
Having said that, you don't need to have a fun filled weekend. Rent a hotel, go shopping at a couple stores, get your nails and hair done (if she is into that) and just spend some quality time together. It doesn't need to be expensive to be quality bonding time.

I was also the child that doesn't get along with the step dad. It makes everything more difficult. I applaud you for taking the time, to show your daughter how special she is to you, like my mother neglected to do. You will have a great relationship when she has left the nest...

How old is your daughter? If she's a teen or pre-teen maybe a mini spa weekend would be nice. Someplace where you both could get your hair and nails down then maybe go shopping afterwards. It's time with her that says your special to me and the most beautiful person in my life.

I'm a single mom to a 5 year old and last winter I took her to the Grand Rio's Hotel/Indoor water park. We had a awesome time and even though we weren't far from home it was nice to just get away and relax. We ordered room service, played at the waterpark and had a blast. It was just her and I and no distractions, no phone calls etc.

You could try going to Duluth or driving to Wisconsin Dells.

What about one of the indoor waterparks (Brooklyn Center and by the Mall of America)? All that water plays makes you forget about the cold weather outside too. Both places have hotels attached.
Hope that helps.
