Good morning,

My mom has been trying to research our genealogy and keeps hitting a wall. She's traced my great-grandfather's family back to a city in Eastern Europe in Russia, Ukraine area (something like Yanef, Yanov?) but she can't seem to find a database that will give her the precise city name and in which country that town is currently located. Has anyone had any experience tracking down family in Eastern Europe/Russia? Any good resources we could contact?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

My mom was able to trace our family history (Northern Europe and Western Europe) back several hundred years. Although we are not Mormon, she was able to use their resources - the Mormon church has an incredible database for genealogy. (She said they did not try to convert her, either. :)

It depends on when they immigrated. I went to the census records and it listed the town my grandparents immigrated from. I think they stopped doing this at some point in time. They immigrated between 1890 and 1910.

Oh they immigrated from Sicily but this was common practice back then.

You can go to my church's family history center. It's free, they have tons of resources and highly knowledgeable people there.

Find the location near you here:

Or you can contact them, they may be able to help you over the phone.

That site seems to have a lot of info about that town. It appears to be spelled Janow but I don't know how to pronounce that. I hope it helps.

I do quite a lot of family genealogy. Joining www.ancestry.com has been so helpful. Yes, it does cost money but it sure is helpful.

Also, Fold3 is a good research site. And try Rootsweb forums.

my mil had gone through http://boards.ancestry.com/
i think you become a member and you start asking questions. she was able to track down her mom's family who was from eastern europe. plus don't forget the borders, man-made, have changed so don't specify the country just the name of the town, and which country if belongs today. you will probably get responses.
ps start from ellis island website.
