The City of Euless has an entire section of it's library devoted to geneology. I've browsed around, and it's quite comprehensive. Their website has some great links, too:

I am interested in beginning to learn more about my family's roots and was wondering if any of you have researched family genealogy. Did you use any kind of guide? Internet resources? Thanks for any help!
Wow! I got some great responses and have several good resources now to get started. I appreciate the input; it will really help me get going on this. Thanks a bunch to everyone who answered. :)

Youo've already gotten some great starting places on the web through the LDS church. If you'd like some more hands on help, you can go to the Carrolton LDS Family History Center. They have trained staff to help you get started. ANYONE can go, search, etc. http://local.yahoo.com/details;_ylt=AtbxOiVkOZ4YMnyhGyt1a...

I was just doing this with my older son last nite and we gathered an awful lot of information using www.ancestry.com
We had some initial information from my father and from my baby book and then my son was able to search in alot of the archives that they provide links to. We have one line all the way back to the 1600s just from one nite. That website has lots of information on how to do things and it automatically searches for all the information others have entered, but just be careful to validate info you add to your tree. My son find some obvious errors with kids being born before parents, so their program doesn't find things like this.
A GREAT place to start is www.familysearch.org. It has where to get started, research guidance, forms, a ton of search engines to look up your family as well as links to other good sites. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints has the largest geneology archive in the world and its free and open to everyone. They even have family history research centers in most of their buildings that are open on a few different days and nights. They are free to everyone, most people that use them are not members of the church, and you will not be prosolyted in anyway about joining the church when there as well. You can order microfish and films to and they have the readers there. It really is the BEST place to start! At their centers too they have people volunteering there that also have a WEALTH of guidence for you too! I have had much luck in this route. On one of my lines I was able to go back to a birth year of 0007 thanks to their large archive of records! Good luck! Sometime it can be frustrating but then a flood gate opens and its AMAZING!! VERY addicting!
Hi S.. I have not done any genealogy for some time because of health and my 2 year old keeping me busy. I would go to www.familysearch.com and also to www.ancestry.com The familysearch.com is free but the other is not unless they have a short trial time-I do not remember if they do or not. You might also try www.rootsweb.com and try doing surname searches online becaue many names are being researched and you may just find others researcing the same lines. I think that www.genealogy.com is another site for you to check. For guides I have not used any per se but on Familysearch.com you can find a ton of information to help you get going.
Good luck and may you find some fascinating information!

Good luck with your searches!
I've done some research on my family history (mainly to track down the Native American Heritage). You start by talking to people in your family... get names, birthdates, birth locations, anniversaries, marriage locations... and any other information you can get by talking to people. You may be surprised to discover that some distant relative has already done a lot of genealogy work. Then you can check the county websites... most of them have a genealogy page with birth and marriage records... as well as census documents. Some of the counties are just now getting around to being online, so you might have to actually go to the county courthouse.
It's tedious work, but very rewarding in the end! I'd recommend getting a family tree database for your computer, just to keep all the information organized.
Good luck, and have fun!

The McKinney Library was just starting a class on how to do this..

Also there is a geneology center located in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that is located over by the North East Mall. That one is the closest to me. Since I don't know where you are, I will give you the link to all the locations in Texas. They have them in Denton, Copelle, McKinny, Dallas, West Fort Worth, and many more. Just scroll down the page. Their are classes offered and someone will always be there to help you.
Feel free to call if you need any help, I'm not sure how much they help with searching, but asking won't hurt. Oh, they aren't all LDS in there either, so don't worry about being proselyted to. :)
I just wanted to second the vote for familysearch.org . The LDS church really does have tons of resources, and will help everyone, not just members of their church. I will check with my mom, who is a huge geneology buff, if there are other sites she would recommend. See if there are any "mormons" , AKA members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, around your area, and I am sure they could point you in the right direction. Good luck, it is a time consuming, yet amazing journey to undertake! ~A.~

all the input you have gotten is good but also if you know where they died, get copies of death certs, that holds a wealth of info. I have two family trees posted on two sites don't ever take something as face value always double check it out, because there are those that will put what ever they want on a site about someone and it may be false, like parents names I am still searching for my gggranddads parents names now I need his death cert and the county health dept were they lived will be able to help you. (oops also the dawes rolls for the native american hertiage. This isn't related to geneolgy but you might be interested in something about the native americans and maybe helping them, go to www.nativeprogress.org it's also known as One Spirit. check it out )
go to www.myheritage.com
