Gassy Fussy Baby Not Sleeping Through the Night

My baby was sleeping about 9 hours a night from 2 months on but around 4 months started waking up in the middle of the night with gas. He's now 5 months and is still getting up in the middle of the night because of his gas. We've tried giving him gas drops before he goes to bed but that doesn't seem to work much for him.

What can I do next?

My friends all used Gripe Water. Can be found at the pharmacy and some holistic places. It soothes the tummy and is safe to use. I only wish I had learned about it when mine were little.

I know this may sound wierd but get a jumperoo. He is 5 months so he can use it. My child has a cleft palate and just had surgery to fix it. But with a cleft the baby gets bad gas because of too much air being swallowed. She used to get so much gas that she would actually vomit in the middle of the night because of it. When she couldn't burp we took her put her in her jumperoo. It would hold her upright and she would bounce and eventually burp. Then you can lay them down for the night. It was the only way to get her not to get sick sometimes. It may help.

Make a tisane of chamomile tea. A tisane is a very light tea. You drop the bag in the bottle for 45 seconds to a minute. It will calm his stomach and help his digestive problems. Try it for a week. He should take 4-6 oz. for it to work.
Are you nursing him? If so it could be something in your diet.

What really helped my baby at that age (and we still use sometimes at 3) is to put 1 drop gas drops per ounce of milk/formula directly into her bottle. For some reason this worked so much better than giving her the drops directly. She would still get gassy but instead of it backing up and making her miserable she would just toot and be fine. If you are BF then that wouldn't work.

I agree with Alysia M, a jumperoo is great! Look for one on craigslist if you can't get a new one. My son always had so much trouble having a bowel movement, but when we would put him in the jumperoo, he would go. I know you don't say anything about BM but I'm sure it will help with your son's gas. Also, try this move (it's going to sound strange, but it works!!): lay your son face up on your lap, but kind of let his body bend so that his head is on your thighs and his bum is on your belly. Then, very gently and slowly pump his legs toward his stomach; just as you would if he was laying flat. My MIL showed me this trick with my daughter (she was SO gassy) and it was amazing how much gas she would release when I did this.

Is he eating solids now? If he is, it could be something he is eating. Also try feeding him smaller portions more frequently. My son would have some bad gas depending on what we fed him-or what I ate before breastfeeding him. It also had to do with him swallowing air while suckling, I think. We used gas drops too. But the problem went away as he got older and became active. And yes, he LOVED his jumper too.

It's probably not gas at all, but teething - or gas from teething. That's about the right age to start teething. Try giving him motrin or tylenol and see if that helps him sleep... Or natural teething tablets or drops, either.
