T.K.
The colors you are describing would go great with Espresso colored wood. It's a dark dark brown, almost black but not quite. It's modern and clean. It would tie together the browns and tans you are talking about.
We will be moving into a new home in April and will FINALLY be updating our outdated living room furniture. Yay! We're thinking that we've decided on a dark tan or brown microfiber couch and loveseat, but we cannot decide on a wood color for the coffe table, tv stand, side tables and bookshelf. We don't know the color of the walls yet, but since it'll be a rent house, I'm guessing they'll be cream or light tan. I'm thinking that cherry woulld look good, what do you ladies think?
I have also looked at distressed oak, but I think it may be too light.

I love the darker mahogony or even the "fake" expresso finishes.
Hey Bethany!
We go with espresso colored or cherry in our house,we like the darker colors. It's classic and will never go out of style.
Our entertainment credenza & curio we bought at wal-mart (Better Homes & Gardens brand) so that if it did get a scratch or two, it wouldn't matter so much.
Since we still have little kids, we do craigslist furniture mostly. Until the kiddos grow up, no use in dropping big bucks on furniture that will have a huge stain or scratch the next day!
I love cherry and have it throuhout my house! Especially with a ligther color furniture. Very classic and beautiful!
I kinda think this depends on the age of your children. We have a DARK coffee table... It has so many scratches on it that really show up because of the color of the finish. I will replace it when my daughter gets older. For now, I use a wood stain cleaner to keep the scratches from screaming at me. Distressed medium dark oak is not out of style. You buy furniture based on your tastes not what someone thinks is stylish. Furnishings are for personal use... style is considered when you are making permanent home changes like counter tops and flooring...
So go with what you like just keep maintenance in mind and your level of stress in that area. :)
Cherry is always beautiful--the real cherry--not the fake looking burgundy kind. :)
I"d stay away from that medium oak color. It's kind of out now. You can never go wrong with classic dark wood furniture.
mix it up & it'll look great!
Seriously, using a combo of wood tones & colors really enhances a home. I'm not a fan of matchy-matchy!
