Full of Despair.

Hi ladies. I need some help. I am in desperate need of seeing a therapist but do not have health insurance. Because of both my husbands and I employment neither one of us has access to health insurace. We can't afford to go with the insurance companies and we apparently make too much money for MN Care (ha!). Because of this, we are drowning in medical debt. I desperately need help and need to see a therapist yet cannot afford it. Does anyone know of free or sliding scale therapists?

What can I do next?

Hi A.,
If Minneapolis is convenient for you, there's the Walk-In Counseling Center (www.walkin.org) on Chicago Ave. You can make an appointment or literally walk in and see one of their volunteer mental health professionals (drs, social workers, licensed therapists, nurses, etc). Good luck to you -- taking care of your mental health is so important for you AND your kids!
Take care,
Sara

Family and Children's Services. They have several locations in the metro area and they do sliding scale. They are very good as well.

I suggest you call 211. It is like 411, but for community resources. There are free and sliding fee scale therapists available around the twin cities, mostly in Mpls and St. Paul. I hope this helps.

You can call any CRISIS HOT LINE and talk to someone. Beleive it or not some times they have a person call you right back so be patient. Go to your county social services and find out what care and services may be available for you. This is paid from our tax dollars, so you have helped pay for this. The county mental health workers may work on a sliding scale/or no charge, they did two years ago. Please be sure to call a crisis line and talk to someone, you are willing, & they can help.

Try Relate Counseling in Minnetonka if you are at all close to the area. They have done and do have a sliding fee structure. If you make too much, the sliding fee may not do much for you but explain your situation and tell them you are really needing help.

Good luck.
