Mamas & Papas-

Thanks a bunch re: your support when I first posed the question re: what to ask at the constipation consultation. Our ped was lovely, and recommended we up the fiber and use a 1/2 dose daily of laxitive to get things moving. She was happy with his height and weight and suggested that we stop catering to him when it comes to food choices, with the hopes that he will soon start eating more fruit and veg when he realizes that our home (and more importantly grandma's) is not a short order restaurant.

Have you guys had any luck with "bridging foods"? She said if he eats bagel with cream cheese, consider bagel with hummos, or if he eats pasta with marinara, consider zuchini with marinara. Our kid has no consistent favorite that we are aware (hubs reportedly would eat anything as a child so long as it had custard on it).

Thanks,
F. B.

So What Happened?

FU means follow up. :)

Thanks for the tips, will consider chia seeds. Most importantly, it is about his understanding that the food presented is the food that could/ should be eaten. If he comes round to that, we'll do well with the rest.

Best to you all,
F. B.

Every time I see FU - I think you (or who ever wrote it) are (is) saying to people to F**K YOU. sorry.

I don't have picky eaters. Never have. My daughter loved everything - even raisins (and I don't like them - she got them from her dad). My boys? Same thing.

Did my oldest son have a problem? Yes. He had a really hard BM one day when he was 5 - and it scared him and he held his BM for a few days. We ended up going to the urgent care - even after we had him sit in a warm sitz bath - the doctor told him that if he continued to hold his BMs that his colon would expand and he wouldn't be able to feel it and he would end up pooping in his pants. He told him at the 5 year level and it helped my son realize that there might be days of hard BMs if he doesn't eat right and drink a lot of water (he had been drinking Kool-Aid at a friends house).

Any way - start fixing him the same meal you eat. If he doesn't eat. Excuse him from the table - DO NOT make it a fight - he will NOT allow himself to starve. Tell him that he has to at LEAST try it. If he tries it and doesn't like it? Okay. He tried. You are NOT a short order cook and you need to stop that now.

Good luck!

Ways we've increased fruit and veggie eating at our house:

-added spinach to our smoothies (you can't see it or taste it)
-plate of veggies with hummus for dip while I'm making dinner, if anyone wants to snack
-sliced apples with peanut butter (or sunflower seed butter) between them for morning snack
-buying new/different fruits/veggies to try
-if we have dessert, it is usually an apple crisp (just apples, oats, cinnamon and ground flax seed)...I let all the sugar and fat come from the scoop of ice cream on top, or I bake a carrot cake where I double the carrots (or add shredded zucchini) and substitute most of the oil for apple sauce

Plus, adding chia seeds to everything (waffles, pancakes, muffins, cookies, yogurt, smoothies) has made a noticeable difference to my son's battle with constipation. You can buy them at Trader Joe's and they are full of fiber, omega-3s and protein.

Good luck!

My DD doesn't like mixed foods. But will eat deconstructed meals (tacos with everything set apart, for example). Or she'll eat something she's seen us eat before. Or if she won't eat a veg cooked, sometimes she will eat it raw. Or she'll eat it if she grows it (container gardening if you don't have a lot of room). You can also trade white pastas for whole grain.
