Frosted Mini Wheats

This may seem silly, but just about every morning, I eat frosted mini wheats for breakfast. I let my 9 month old have a bite once, and now he has to share them with me every day! I am glad he is eating healthy cereal, but I have also noticed he has been pooping like 4 times a day lately. Could the cereal be too harsh for his body? He really enjoys it, but if it is damaging his intestines i don't want to risk that. I intend to ask my doctor, but just wondering if anyone has advice in the meantime.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I just needed some reassurance that I wasn't giving him something wrong!

I dont think this is ruining his intestines. Frosted mini wheats are high in fiber. My daughter also eats frosted mini wheats and use to poop all the time fron them. Her body eventually got use it and now she is back down to only pooping 1-2 times a day.

I have been letting my 10 month old take bites of our food throughout the day, with some limitations. I think that it is fine to feed him mini wheats, although I would be a little hesitant about the kind that is frosted. For the past six months, I have used a great book as a resource...Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. It has been most helpful.

I do not think that you can ever have too much fiber! My son loved eating mini wheats too. All varieties. He always have the mushiest poop. Once when we were potty training, he pooped his pants. I had to use a port a potty to try to clean him. Well with no water and poop that was mushy and gritty from the mini wheats - it was no day at the beach! I told DH that our son was not to have mini wheats again until after he was poopy trained! Ugh - what a mess!

actaully you should have a bowel movement after every meal and it should be semi solid and not smell. now i understand that for most of us this isn't the norm but that is the function of a healthy body and digestive system. the fiber is good for him and i don't knwo that you can really have to much of it, don't quote me on that though. but while i would ask you doctor about it just for piece of mind i wouldn't worry about it unless it is really smeely, strange in color or texture. i babysit for a 15 month old that has a poopy diaper at least twice in the 8 hours she is here, after breakfast and then after lunch, so it seems pretty normal to me.

It's the milk. Try giving him a small bowl with his formula over it instead of milk and see if that helps!! M.

Actually we are all supposed to poop 3 to 4 times a day. It keeps our colons cleaned out and healthier. I would keep letting him have the fiber it is good for him!

I think it's probably the fiber. As the other mom mentioned, as long as it's not wierd smelly or has a wierd texture, it sounds like a good thing to me. But I would ask you doctor just to be sure.

I have to disagree with the consensus here and say you CAN get too much fiber, because fiber interferes with the absorption of some vitamins and minerals (for example, calcium). Whether he's eating too much I wouldn't say but it IS possible. Also, I wouldn't call "frosted" anything "healthy." It may not be the worst thing in the world but it's not the best, either. Anything processed (you buy it already made) or with a lot of sugar is less than ideal, especially at that age. I'd stick with single ingredient items at first, personally (mashed banana, for example). That's just me, of course, but I wanted to put my 2 cents in because I dont' think it's really "healthy" so if you are thinking you are feeding him something really good for him, I'd say maybe look into that some more. Hope that helps?! Certainly wouldn't hurt to stop giving him the mini wheats and see if the pooping slows down, then you know for sure that's what it is...

Hey Kristin,

I ate the same thing when I was pregnant with my son! Now he is 9 months and wants everything I eat. I will have to try that. He isnt very regular, and it might help! So thanks for sharing!! I would guess its the fiber also... and agree with everyone else that if "it isnt broke, dont fix it". Enjoy and congrats!!

I would bet it is because there is so much fiber in the mini wheats. I don't think it is harmful and like you said, at least he is eating healthy!
