Freezing Beef Stew and Other Freezing Questions

I am going to be making a beef stew in my crock pot this week, and was thinking of freezing the leftovers. Have you ever done this? How did it come out after being reheated? I have heard mixed messages about the potatoes.

Also, I am wanting to have more homemade freezer dinners, to make my life a little easier. I have enchiladas, chili, taco meat, lasagna, preshaped burger patties, and shredded/cubed chicken. Any other suggestions?

Any other advice about freezing food is greatly appreciated . . . the good, the bad, the ugly, any special wrapping methods etc!

Thanks!

What can I do next?

Sure, we freeze all of our left overs. When making stew, we do go light on the potatoes and then make up fresh ones.

I freeze everything. Alrecipies has a terrific crockpot Refried bean recipe. I make my own sauces, and bread freezes great, as does pizza dough.

I use a food saver and plastic bags. I'm struggling to figure out the best way to freeze soups, be it in bags or plastic containers...homemade pasta also freezes great. Ad cake! No one even knows it was frozen. I just wrap it in plastic and then foil. Pie also tastes better out of the freezer, the cold does something to the dough that makes it even better.

Chicken pot pie is terrific to freeze. Freeze raw and put it in the oven when it is preheating. Add about 30 more minutes onto the time.

Don't forget shepards pie. And rice actually tastes better coming out of the freezer, I always double recipes and freeze.

You know, I really don't know why, but in not a fan of freezing leftovers.
I'd rather make less, twice.
My "perfect dinner accomplishment" is when there is enough for everyone and NO leftovers. That's just me.
The last time I froze stew, I ended up pitching it out.

I prefer to roux it up super thick, pour into pie shells, then freeze.. For pot pies.

But I'll freeze and reheat just in bags, as well.

The potatoes might mush up a bit when thawed but it will just make the soup thicker! If you can freeze it in a freezer Ziplock bag (once cool), it will save you tons of space. Just don't reheat in there.

I also freeze in Tupperware. I freeze burgers in baggies. Andything else can be cooked in a small aluminum tin and wrapped well in foil and put in a Ziplock and frozen.

We freeze stew all the time. It turns out fine. We typically put in more carrots than potatoes to suit our kiddos preferences, but the potatoes are okay.

Freeze away!

The stew will be just fine in the freezer but do omit the potatoes when freezing - they do not freeze well at all.
