How to Freeze Soups/stews?

This may be a silly question, but I've not had to deal with early food preparation before; always just went day by day. Now I want to cook some meals before the baby is born so that my family can have good home cooked meals while I rest up the first week or so, and I don't know what to do with stews, gumbos, or chili....do you put it in a freezer bag? Are there storage containers that work well for freezing? Do you guys have advice for freezing other foods as well? Thanks in advance.

I use freezer bags and just get out as much air as possible.

Just make sure that what you are freezing does not have potatoes in it. They do not freeze and thaw well. You can always add them when you reheat if you "need" them in your stew.

Here are some other suggestions foods that freeze well -- Chicken Spaghetti (I have a fantastic recipe), Spaghetti & Sauce, almost all casseroles (I have tons of recipes), & Taco Meat. If you need any more help feel free to PM me or just Google "freezer cooking" and you will find tons of info.

Good Luck!

i use freezer bags, i let it cool & then put into the bag and then lay flat, then after it's frozen i can sit it up on its side or stack them up. i don't like using plastic containers because i always drop stuff and the plastic cracks & then i wont use it because there might be pieces in the food.

Cool hot soup or stew before refrigerating or freezing it
Place the soup or stew in an airtight container, and remove as much air as possible before refrigerating or freezing. The less air in the container, the longer the soup or stew can be stored or put it in a freezer bag

I make a lot of home made soups and stews and make extra for freezing.

I use the little Rubbermaid (about 2 cups maybe)containers for the soups/stews and then I wrap tightly with saran. I also will put it in a freezer bag. A little overkill I know but it works for me.

Noodles and Potatoes do not freeze well. I still do it anyway, my daughter loves to take a container after school and heat it for snack.

I routinely freeze, chicken noodle soup, chili, veggie soup, beef stew and brunswick stew. I also make home made chicken pot pie....I double the recipe and freeze one for later use.

Good luck.

You can also freeze them in ice cube trays. You only need to get out as many ice cubes as you need. Works well for childrens portions.

I use my food saver... Put the soup in the bag and put in the freezer until frozen then food saver it. Removes all air. Otherwise I would just use a ziplock baggie so that it is easier to thaw than containers.

I put it in freezer bags..after it has cooled of course..and let as much air out as possible. Be sure you lay it on something flat to freeze, not straight on the "grill" shelves of your freezer. (Yes I stupidly learned that from personal experience:). If you are using noodles, be sure to cook them a bit less than what you need for eating immediately. And I have never frozen a potato or creamy soup..not sure how it would do honestly. Good luck and happy cooking! ~A.~
