My 4 year old son just had his speech evalution. They said he needs speech therapy 2x a week for the next 6 months. There is no way we can afford paying for this. I'm hoping someone knows of a program that provides free speech therapy. I've been told that the public school system offers free therapy, but when I ask about it, nobody seems to know what I'm talking about. If anyone knows about this program please let me know.

What can I do next?

K.,
If you live in Jax you maybe able to get this for your son thru the Speech and Hearing Center, (IT SHOULD BE IN THE PH BOOK)and you may need a referral from his pediatrician. When my daughter was younger than your son she went sometimes twice a week up until she was in like 2nd grade. I beleive it was based on income/family size and Medicaid should also cover it, if that's available to you. They will also try to provide a location closest to your home for you to meet up with the therapist, our location was at a church in Ortega. T he 3 for this center is ###-###-####, it's located at 1128 N. Laura St. and it's also a United Way Agency. You may also call Hope Haven ,###-###-####

Godd Luck to you both. C. S.

Hi, K..

Is your 4yr old in VPK? If so, I think your local school system is the best bet. I've heard that through some cities, free ST is available, but I do not know any details.

If your little one is in VPK, contact the school's guidance office and they can give you more info on the ST available. Best of luck.

You are looking for a program called "Early Steps". It is Florida's Early Intervention program. After a year of private insured speech therapy, our therapist mentioned the program as our son was approaching 3 yrs old (and insurance was about to cut off benefits at age 3). They paid for EVERYTHING that insurance did not. They did an initial evaluations, hearing test, and then got us ongoing private insurance and did all the paperwork required to get him into our local elementary school for speech therapy.

1-800-654-4440 is the number or you can go to the website of Early Steps. We had a REALLY great experience with this program.

Yes...Just contact Child Find....This is with the school system...they will set you up at a local school to help him. Be aware that they will only do things they deem educationally necessary....and that Speech therapy with them is not as great as you would get with an outside agency...Most people who have their kids in Speech/language in the school system, also have it some place else. This is also NOT one on one...He would be in a group of kids.

You may want to check with your insurance to see who they will pay for. Most insurance companies will pay for at least 6 sessions...and then places like Hope Haven have financial aide and some places will work on a sliding scale.
